i find it very important to not disclose why you cant come in or what your plans are. its none of their business and its good to set boundries.

Just called HR when they wanted me to do some trainings off the clock, so everyone can finish them early, before the due date. HR sent managers a friendly reminder that trainings are supposed to be done only at work, and that anyone asks an employee to work off the clock is subject to PIP or termination.

If this was me after the conversation I would start looking for another job! Haven’t got time working for someone like that.
You are work to earn money. Bosses need to understand that. Their bad planning is their problem and the companies problem for making them a boss!

"You pay for 40 hours, the rest costs 25% more, with an added 40% because it's unscheduled, according to the contract BOTH OF US signed. If you feel that's unfair, the union's down the road."

That has shut my previous boss's EVERY request of overtime.

Boss: What are you doing?
Uh..it's none of your concern.

As much as I would love to say this is how it goes… it’s not at least not with service industry jobs. They treat you like shit and curse you out when you don’t come in. They threaten everything and anything and if you stand up for yourself they give you less hours the following week

Yo last weekend my boss texted me at noon _the day of_ telling me to come in at 1pm & I didn’t end up checking my texts till 1:30 while in the middle of lunch with my family 😀
Yup, asking for advanced notice and communication is key 😭

"i need you to come in this weekend"

"No."

The more you say, the more they'll try to argue and bargain with you to get you to work.

I remember I once had to fight to keep my day off the next day. When I did return to work (after my day off) I asked a co-worker if we were busy. He told me it was dead slow.

Real world: "Ok then, you'll have much free time next week cause you're fired!"

I agree with its none of their business why you are not available.
Also me, " I cant because I'm watching my grandkids!" Everyone I work with including all managers know NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MY GRANDKIDS!
Conversation over.❤😂❤

You're a lot nicer than I am when I'm asked to pick up a shift. It's usually through txt cause I don't answer MY phone when I see that my workplace is calling and they've figured that out pretty quick. It's always a one word answer.
Work: I need you to pick up the 7A to 7P Friday.
Me: no
Work: We're short staffed and you need to start contributing. This is a family and we need to pull together and go above and beyond for each other. So do you really want to leave your fellow coworkers high and dry?
Me: yep

I had a toxic boss who would ignore major issues. Like I worked with kids, we had kids that would attack their teachers, other students, run out of school, and destroy school property. I ve had chairs thrown at me, been punched, kicked, spat on, body slammed to the ground, screamed at, cussed out, so many things! If I told my boss or showed in the least bit that I was stressed I would either get told “ this is just what we deal with, if u can’t handle it maybe u shouldn’t work here” or I was written up.
I was written up for disrespectful body language because I wasn’t smiling while dealing with horrendous behaviors. How should I have responded to that?
Keep in mind this was a regular school. I was not specifically working with groups of children with special needs. When I applied I did not expect me being hurt to be almost a daily occurrence.

— can you come in to work on weekends?
— £2000 and I'm in. Otherwise no

You got lucky I wish it worked like that. If I would’ve said anything related to half of that, my boss would’ve been like. “ oh you can’t come in I thought I was going to be able to depend on you, but since I can’t, I’m gonna have to let you go. Even though I bust my ass day in and day out.

Its just so frustrating thst you have to put in so much more effort in these conversations when your boss clearly doesn't.

“I’m going to need you to come in for a shift “ is where the boss was incorrect. Stephanie was maybe available and who knows who else (including them). That’s WHY there’s a manager AND an assistant. If you’re not either of those then YOU are not needed.
I’d ask for clarification of why the boss felt the need to word it that way. I’d let them know they have options, but it’s not my personal time that’s theirs to claim they “ need.”

my husband worked in a factory whose manager would literally go around the floor at 5 ( end of shift time) and point to the staff saying your staying till 7 or your starting at 7 am tomorrow or your working Saturday. no questions asked nothing. anyone who didnt comply was given the hardest jobs and then told to not come in the next week. my husband was eventually let go with stupid excuses as he wasn't able to do as much overtime after our second son as we had 2 under 2.

can you also talk about toxic co-works? What if a co-worker projects their laziness? Anything to say to them? And anything to do so the projection won't be adopted by the managers as well?
