Step 1: What is a jointer?
Understand what a jointer is: a machine for leveling off pieces of rough wood.

Step 2: Locate the high corners
Determine the high corners of the planks and mark them--these are the points where you will apply the most pressure to level them out.

Tip
Use a push pad to apply pressure to the front of the plank and a push stick to apply pressure to the back and to guide the plank along.

Step 3: Checking the height difference
Before cutting, make sure the difference between the two table heights is where you want it. Also, the fence should be at 90 degrees. Lock all adjustments in place. Repeat the same process with the edges and use an engineer’s square to ensure levelness.

FINALLY a video that shows the finer points that I was looking for. This 6min video was more informative than ones I have seen that are 20+ minutes long.

Thank you.

This is the complete yet concise explanation I needed. You presented it in a professional way with a casual voice--very rare indeed.

Just restored a 1950's Craftsman jointer and learned a lot from your video. Totally new to this tool so your vid was a tremendous help. Thanks!

Thanks for the good adjusting tips. I am just looking for a jointer to take the bow out of some narrow boards I want to use for guitar necks. I think this will work out nicely.

Good process video. As a woodworking teacher, there are a couple of safety concerns. Safety glasses are a minimum and a machine should never be used if the blade guard does not return to the fence and cover the blade when not in use. Jointer blades don't have brakes and the blade will continue to spin for a while after the machine is shut down.

What do you do if (for example) if you’re using a 6” jointer but your board exceeds 6”... love all your videos!

I enjoy watching your videos. I just started making projects out of pallet wood for my chalk paint classes. Currently we use just a hand sander and jigsaw. We are looking for a faster way to get the wood clean but keep the rustic look. Do you have any advice for what tools I need? I’ve looked into a hand planer, joiner, a belt sander (quite expensive), and an electric thickness planer. Currently we are only using pallet wood because we love the rustic look. Would love your advice as you seek very knowledgeable and experienced!

So you said you would go to the planer after the jointer, is there a reason you couldn't just do both sides on the jointer?
