I'm teaching my kid standard math and their teacher is marking their homework as wrong because the showed work is in standard math, not new math. It's infuriating!! Now I have to learn the new way just to teach my kid math.

You can do maths however you want.
As a maths teacher, I give students all different possible ways of solving a problem, but whatever works for them is ok

Yes there’s different way or creative way to get to point a to point b

Imagine they telling you how to buy groceries, they tell you have 10 bucks and instead of giving the cashier the 10 buck you gave them penny because that’s how you learn math the new way.
Not necessary to do that your just wasting time.

What the actual crap did I just witness. If we were taught math like this before I genuinely would have failed it miserably

Hand your kid a videogame system and a football videogame. They will learn addition, subtraction, fractions, multiplication, and narrow down possibly where they would like to go to college based off of colors and other stuff. (It sounds stupid, but I can do complex math not because of math class but because I wanted to win the Heisman in NCAA football whatever) And also teach your kid normal math so they can win the speed tests.

Theyre just adding to 16 until they get to 37. I dont know why a lot of you can't understand stand that.

For some people, addition is easier than subtraction so they'll add numbers to the smallest value until they get to the other number.

A lot of you learn multiplication like this

I do multiplication by binomial expansion

(10+6)(10+7)
100+60+70+42

Not only is it easier to do in your head, it's quicker.

The "new" method that is shown (and I'll tell you it's not new. I've been doing this for 15 years) has been around for a while.

I would say (gen x'er here) that if you cannot grasp the idea after finding the best teaching style for you (auditory, visual, physical, etc., ) then you were taught how to think, not how you learn.

Ok real quick do 32-18 in your head, no paper allowed. 18 is 2 away from 20, 32-20 is 12, add the 2 back on and you get 14. That’s the point behind the “new math”. It’s meant to build numbersense, and make mental math easier. Now do 345-287. It’s the same as 3+10+45, so 58. Now do 7163-5327. It’s 3+70+600+1163=1836. Do you see the upside of the method now?

That is not how i was taught in school but thats litterally how my brain does it anyway so unless they are the show your work then mark it wrong cuz you did a different equally valid way it doesnt matrer

It shouldn’t matter how you get to your answer if the answer is correct. The homework is supposed to be accuracy and showing how you got there. There are so many ways to navigate math.
