How To Keep Salad Fresh For Days (Tips and Tricks)

My objective for this channel is to share with others what I have learned over the last 30+ years about living and eating healthier. I share my knowledge with my small circle of friends all the time. I am not a doctor, nor do I hold any type of medical degree, but I believe that my tried experiences may help someone else.

For over 30 years I have used every diet imaginable to lose weight, but I confess that I am now at home using the vegan lifestyle. I want to share what I have learned about eating and enjoying food. And, since I am still learning how to be more consistent with this lifestyle, I have decided to eat more healthily, realizing the weight will come off eventually. Though I have not reached my goal weight, I know that sharing with other people in front of a camera with help me to stay on course.

I have, with the help of my husband of 37 years, raised 3 grown children. I will also share some cooking shortcuts as well as some natural formulas I have used and still use for everyday problems.

I love beautiful people like you who pass down your wisdom and knowledge to others.
Something as simple as preserving your greens.
To me there is something so deep and precious about doing that.
It helps you in so many areas of life. It feels strengthening and you feel equipped.
That's how I see it.
Thank you.

Why am I here? I have no idea. Ask youtube... but this lady reminds me of my grandma and that comforts me weirdly enough..

When my fridge is so full I can't put a bowl in it, I put the salad and paper towels in a gallon size ziplock bag and then press out as much air as I can and zip it shut. Keeps the lettuce crisp, but takes up less space than a bowl.

I do this!

The “paper-towel trick” also works to prolong other veggies like cucumber and tomatoes. I don’t use a whole tomato or cucumber at once, so I wrap the part that would go into the fridge into a piece of paper towel and then it goes in a ziplock bag (press out as much air as you can prior to closing). Towel absorbs moisture and keeps them from getting mushy. Change out the paper towel when it’s saturated, and repeat. Save $ not having to throw away veggies that get too mushy after only a couple days.

Love your salad tips Berta! My mother made the best salads. She would put all the salad greens in a big bowl of ice water. Those greens would get soo crispy. She would drain and spin them until completely dry. She then took her garden cucumbers and would peel a few strips off but not all. She would take the tines of a fork and go down the length of the cucumber on 2 sides. When you cut the cucumber it had a pretty edge. Every time I eat a beautiful salad I think of her and the effort she put into making salads beautiful for our family.:)

I’ve been doing this for years now, and another tip for crisping partially wilted lettuce, is to cover it with iced water in a bowl, and leave it in the fridge overnight.

I wish I had watched this a long time ago, for years I have been eating nasty salads that I have made up in advance. After a few days I am having to force myself to try and keep it down after I eat it, but now I think I am going to be able to have good salads from now on, such a simple trick of using paper towels.

I want to thank you for this technique. I try it after 10 days my salad was still fresh and crispy.🙂🙂🙂🙂

I tried your method and it works beautifully. I went out and got a salad spinner and air tight container and the prepped and washed lettuce stays crisp for days. The secret is removing all the water. Thank you again.

I’m going to do it. I hate throwing money away on lettuce that gets wilted too soon. What a sweet lady. Thanks for saving me money.

Hi, all if you don't have a salad spinner after you wash your greens shake em off and put them into the middle of a dish towel, pick up the corners in one hand and spin it around your head and voila it's dried, hope that helps xx

Thank you for reminding me of what is actually so simple. We tend to forget when we are seniors what we did when we had families to feed. Thank you your vid was great.

Thank you Berta! Looking forward to try this. I live alone and always find that I throw out a lot of salad greens because they go soggy. Finally a solution to help so I can have my greens last longer!!

Thank you so much for the great tips! I do this with fresh herbs like cilantro, mint, etc. and they last considerably longer as well.
