Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, goes over a common serve problem among tennis players at all levels, and shares a powerful tip to easily fix it.

When it comes to the serve, you can have a slightly different motion from the deuce court to the ad court; however, it should not be extreme as Jeff has noticed during the last decade as a high performance tennis coach.

Jeff performs a detailed serve technique comparison between the deuce and ad court where he focuses on the stance, shoulder turn, and elbow position. He considers that having a massive difference on your serve motion can hinder your consistency and disguise. Instead, you should focus on making minor adjustments and keep a solid base on both ends.

Finally, Jeff suggests checking your service motion from both the deuce and ad court to find out whether you’re making a similar mistake, so you can fix it right away. He believes both players and coaches should pay attention to these small technical details of the serve.

Are you measuring the shoulder turn relative to the baseline, or relative to the direction of the ball he will be hitting? Because relative to the direction of the shot, he seems to me to be turning the shoulder more in the deuce court.

I'm a little confused about this. Imagine a straight line from the server's shoulders to the returner for both positions. Serving on the deuce side, the line will end up at the ad court which means that he will have to rotate quite substantially to aim to body of the server. More than 90 degrees. While on the ad side, the line projects directly to the returner which means to me that he would rotate around 90 degrees or less to aim for the returner. This is just the opposite of your conclusion. Maybe we are looking at different targets. Can you be clearer on what your target is?

Hey Jeff! Thanks for information! Why turn less on Deuce side? Any biomechanics/ geometrical reason for it?

I understand about the shoulder turn, but what about the differences with foot position? I see the guy's right foot is much farther back in the ad court.

Should he turn his feet in the deuce court to angle them 45 degrees towards the deuce court so that his body is angled towards the deuce court?
