Teaching my Wife How to Serve

In this, on-court lesson with my wife, I help her fix a very common serve flaw at the recreational level. Slowing the racquet down and pausing in the trophy phase causes many players to lose power on their serves. A simple adjustment to the rhythm can help to get more swing momentum by continuously moving the racquet in and out of the trophy phase, therefore, increasing racquet head speed.

The beginning of this was hilarious and had me laughing out loud, because it so reminded me of a few recent trips to the court with my own wife. I was quickly reminded that when it comes to trying to coach (or be coached by) a spouse, the line between bravery and stupidity can get mighty thin, buddy! I wanted to send my wife a link to the video, but I couldn't figure out what side of the line that would land me on. :)

Good luck, Nik! I made an attempt to help my wife get rid of her pancake serve, just like you. She found the process frustrating and doesn’t like to practice either, so I gave up. I am having better luck with my 11 year old daughter, who does not have the disadvantage of years of muscle memory.
