Catholic authority contradicted

In my experience, many people misunderstand the weight of this point. They do not deal in a straightforward manner with the fact that Paul's teaching here requires that normal Christians (not a special class of clergy, bishop, or pope) be able to reason and compare what every potential authority may say (including angels or even apostles) with what is known for certain to be the prior teaching of the apostles. The only place that content is found for sure, in the current day, is in the text of Scripture. This simply demands a situation where normal Christians are not only allowed, but required, to ascertain whether a teaching from a church father, a church council, or even a pope, is in contradiction with what the apostles gave us in the text of the New Testament.

If you hear anyone push back on this reasoning, as I know many will, please make sure that they are understanding it properly first. It certainly doesn't work to claim that this principle was only applicable to the Galatians in the first century, or only applies to whatever mysterious and unknowable content they may have personally heard, rather than to the foundation which was laid at that time. I see no way for the authority claims of the pope to survive Galatians 1:8.

Crazy how the next verse repeats the declaration. This is so serious that it needs to be reiterated

And in just the next chapter Paul talks about going to those who were the highest esteemed leaders of the church (Peter, James and John), and says “As for those who were held in high esteem - whatever they are makes no difference to me, God does not show favouritism - they added nothing to my message.” Paul really emphasises that even those held in the highest esteem have no authority apart from the gospel.

Oh how many times have I quoted that verse in the past 5 years 🙄so many Christian’s are gullible to whatever their pastor says…which is why you check everything by what the word of God says! Thank you Mike Winger 🙋‍♀️

John 13:16 ESV Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

Paul was a messenger and he knew that what he was writing was the Word of God

When they claim authority over the text and then contradict what the text says, you know you can ignore them.

I could be wrong but from my understanding the Catholic Church doesn’t see church authority as superior to scripture, they see them as equally infallible authorities on matters of doctrine. However they’ll say the magisterium is needed in order to infallibly interpret scripture. So I see where Mikes coming from but it’s not a totally accurate representation of Catholicism. Also I slightly disagree with the interpretation of Galatians 1:8, I agree that Paul is saying that someone should be accursed for preaching a different gospel but I don’t think Paul only has in mind the words he’s written in his letters I think Paul also is including his actual preaching or his oral teaching itself in that, because we have to remember these letters were written 20+ years after Jesus death so for at least the first 2-3 decades the church had no New Testament to go off of, only the oral teachings of the apostles.

The Bereans were loved by Paul for challenging him with scripture.

I've always wondered why this verse doesn't come up more in these discussions as well! Good preaching Mike!

I say this from a desire to understand rather than challenge, but how does this make sense given there was no bible or scripture when it was written?

By Gospel, Paul is surely referring to the good news itself, and warning against the Judaizers at the time in Galatia who were claiming that gentiles needed to adopt Jewish law to be properly follow Christ (contrary to what Jesus taught and Paul had spread).

Grateful for guidance!

Total agreement….Remember that “Leadership” is always where the “root” of any lie begins….and is kept “alive”, by building a bigger one on top of the last one, and so on and henceforth… even in the Protestant “Christian” Church, Mike…or anywhere…

I heard another guy on YouTube trying to refute you and saying you were being deceitful because we only know that the GALATIANS can't exept another gospel but we don't know what gospel THEY received.

I can't believe the lengths people will go to to deny the truth of scripture. OBVIOUSLY Paul taught them the same gospel he taught everyone else as he says there is no other gospel.

Great stuff Mike, the messenger doesn’t have the authority. Man! It’s because we’re not the authors, we’re just sharing something given to us

Thanks Mike.
I also like 2 Timothy 3 16-17 for when they accuse me of being "sola scriptura". ❤

I grew up Catholic and didn’t understand why Protestants disagreed so much with Catholics until I started reading the Bible more. Your videos gave me true Biblical knowledge that helped me leave Catholicism, my children were surprised to hear me refer to Catholicism as a false religion.
