The Best Gaming Laptop in 2024: Legion Pro 7i (Gen9)

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is probably the best 16" gaming laptop I've used this year. This Gen 9 Pro 7i packes the latest 14th-gen Intel Core i9 processor, with the RTX 4080 (175W), 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD. This is probably the best bang for the buck gaming laptop I've used. Now, let's take a look at what its pros and cons are and whether or not you should pick one up yourself.

Specs as reviewed: Intel Core i9 14900HX, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, RTX 4080 (175W)

This video was edited in Davinci Resolve 19 Studio with the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Laptop!

Lenovo is a lot better of a brand than Asus. I’ve always enjoyed Lenovo products from personal laptops to the ones my work provided me with. Personal preference for sure on the screen. I actually prefer matte finish on displays because I can’t stand glare when using inside businesses or classes.

I ordered this exact laptop, it's scheduled for delivery on Wednesday. I'll fill you guys in on my thoughts when I've had a little time with it. I have to say, I'm very excited to go back to Lenovo. The Lenovo I had in college, was the best laptop I've ever had. I screwed up a couple of years ago and went with an HP Omen, bad mistake, it's been nothing but trouble, but I'm pretty sure I'll be more than happy with the 7i pro 4090.

My next laptop, I don`t need OLED, I want matte IPS!
Thanks Lenovo for that!
If they put Ultra processor, that`d be a bottle neck and wouldn`t let GPU work full power.

one small thing Ive notice lately and with this laptop is that the Kensington lock is not a thing anymore.

Great video, just one slight detail: top and bottom panels are indeed metal, but the interior is plastic (and the trackpad is too), albeit very high quality one, unlike the pro 9i.

I’m currently testing an Asus ROG Strix G18 RTX 4080 and I heard good things about the Pro 7i Gen 9. I decided to order one from Lenovo because after tax it was $2, 800 USD for an RTX 4090 with discounts and promo codes. I really enjoy the Asus because of the 18” screen, but I decided that I’d rather sacrifice screen real estate for a better GPU. There aren’t many people covering this laptop, but the ones who have, show the CPU temps as regularly hitting 100c while gaming. That’s my primary concern with this laptop. I don’t care if the fans get very loud as long as the temps are kept in check. Anyway, thanks so much for this review. It’s definitely helping to alleviate my concerns about my purchase.

Love your videos, Mark. Small suggestion (not that you need my help; you are killing it and I've gotten to the point where I watch all your stuff) -- when you mention the brightness and only give 'peak' brightness, it would be helpful if you mention if that is for HDR only or is that the full panel brightness in SDR? I imagine peak brightness is not the brightness of the entire panel, which may be more important to a potential buyer (and definitely to a gamer). So a viewer like me is left wondering what the actual real brightness of the panel is. In fairness, we could just Google it, but it would still be helpful to have that info in the video. Have a great night man.

Just ordered this laptop, I’d initially gone for the 4070, but it was the 8gb 4070 and 8gb is ? Not enough. I wasn’t sure whether I could justify getting the 4090. Hopefully this will do the job! While I share concerns about Chinese dependence, the legion range just seem fab.

Man, I'm still torn between the G16 4080 (vapor chamber) and Pro 7i 4080. Btw the G16 actually can do 125w instead of 115w if you really look into it. Maybe the performance desparity is not that massive enough to sacrifice the display, speakers, and portability. Im so frustrated between these two that I might just end up with a thinkpad P1 gen 7 for less performance, but great at everything else and durability unmatched.

Great review. I have the Legion 5 16 with a 4070, it doesn't quite do what I want so I plan to return it and get this 7i pro. Also, am I the only one who doesn't care about fan noise and speaker quality? We all game with noise cancelling headsets right?? lol.

... just a note : I understood that only the upper part (the lid) and the bottom part of the laptop are metalic, the "keyboard area" inside is plastic as well as the touchpad (no more glass touchpad) and the thin bezels around the screen are also plastic. The side parts (the big vents) are also plastic ...

This vapour chamber heat sink version accumulates lots of dust

Wouldn't mind seeing a review of the lower price point Legion Pro 5i with a RTX 4070 and how it stacks up to the 7i.

Dislike for not appreciating quality IPS matte screen. It does not flicker, does not reflect stuff. How much more colorful picture do you guys need

Anyone use this laptop for blender/unreal engine? Any issue when you use this laptop for some heavy 3D rendering??
