I love how the Smash invite letter changed from being only part of the Animal Crossing games to being an integral part of Smash Bros. characters reveals

I think the reason Olimar threw a red Pikmin at Charizard is because... Red Pikmin are immune to fire damage

In Rosalina's trailer, Kirby being on Rainbow Road also somewhat references Kirby being in a racing game that being Kirby Air Ride

There's a possible detail a lot of people miss in Villager's reveal trailer. Rosie and Margie are both main characters in the Animal Crossing movie, and if that wasn't enough, Margie in the movie has a sketchbook, while that's not the same as the regular book she is reading from in the reveal trailer, they are still pretty similar further cementing the possible nod. It's just too much of a coincidence considering both villagers otherwise have no real significance.

Just some additional stuff regarding Rosalina & Luma's reveal trailer that wasn't mentioned here: Masahiro Sakurai has mentioned this first tidbit when looking back at all of the reveal trailers created for Smash 3DS, Wii U and Ultimate, but the inclusion of Kirby in the trailer ultimately gave it a Mario Kart VS Kirby Air Ride feel to it. This is also helped by the choice of music in the first moments of the trailer where Kirby rides across the stars and eventually Rainbow Road, which is the opening theme of Kirby Air Ride.

And just in case no one mentioned it yet, Kirby dancing with the Luma at the end of the reveal trailer is also a clear nod to the Kirby Dance, which the pink puffball typically performs upon clearing a stage or beating a boss in his home series. How cute!

Another detail in the Rosalina trailer is that it opens with Kirby Air Ride music (the intro theme) and transitioning to Mario Kart, which is a sort of fake-out since MK8 info was hot news back then (and make people think Kirby content was coming to the game)

The Mii reveal trailer was actually super underrated from a marketing perspective. It used Nintendo celebrities doing something completely random and unexplained (but awesome), before specifically highlighting the Wii U gamepad, which was obviously being pushed heavily at the time, and then doubling up for a cross-promotion with the Amiibo reveal. Really good stuff!

Also, for Mega Man’s “joins the battle” I always interpreted that as a callback to Brawl, since Mega Man was among the first reveals for Smash 4. Brawl actually started the taglines with the character’s name, followed by “joins the brawl”.

My favorite was definitely Mega Man's trailer.

I always thought the missile move Iwata did was supposed to be a reference to E. Honda from Street Fighter.

Another thing about Wii Fit Trainer: The line "Weighs In" could be a reference to the practice in boxing or MMA where the fighters are weighed the day before a match, suggesting that WFT is ready to battle
Edit: My goodness I wasn't ready for this many likes

The second I saw Kazuya’s red eye glowing during his trailer I was screaming like a MadMan

0:57 can I just mention that Villager planted a bunch of tree saplings all next to each other, right by his house. If I'm not mistaken, you can't even do that in New Leaf without having them all wilt the next day.

I love how much the smash series has to cover to this day.

Just a thought: Greninja standing on the stick could be a reference to Lucario standing on the icicle in Brawl. Probably not, but that's what it reminded me of.

I can’t wait to see all the references and homages in later trailers because they go all out.

I feel like Rosie and Margie being the only normal villagers featured in Villager's trailer (the others, Isabelle and Tom Nook, being special villagers) is a nod to the Animal Crossing movie where they were main characters

Samus in Mac's trailer is also likely a reference to the fact Samus is actually remarkably tall (around 6'3 if I recall), so the height disparity is especially apparent.

One of my favorite little references in these smash trailers is the one in Jokers where he sits next to Pirahna plant, as reference to the plant Joker can take care of in P5. Which i dont think anyone actually did. (I only found out you can take care of the plant in my third playthrough of the game lol)

I’ll never forget seeing DK yawning and instantly knowing that it’s King K. Rool and losing my mind during the reveal.
Also the same goes for when the second I saw Incineroar’s eyes.

For Little Mac, his rapid punches are actually a reference to how fast he really is in the Wii game. If you pay attention to the timer, it slows down when Little Mac stuns and punches his opponents.

I remember when I was 13 back in 2009 when I first played Brawl for the first time. I took notice of Palutena (for various reasons). I played a lot of Smash Bros Rumble (Old PC Smash Bros fan game a lot of people played before we had Smash Bros Crusade) and saw Pit's final smash in that, but not Palutena until I played Brawl. Of course I fell in love at first site cuz look at her. But I made a prediction to myself saying "What of she makes it in the next game assuming we get a next game?" Naturally I forgot over time cuz 2009, 2014, that's a long enough time. Then BOOM I gotten the game on Wii U (along with the Wii U too) the year it came out and saw her in the game. I was happy.
