Unreal Engine 5 Mountain Shrine ⛰️ UE4/UE5 Direct Comparison (4K)

Unreal Engine enables game developers and creators across industries to realize next-generation real-time 3D content and experiences with greater freedom, fidelity, and flexibility than ever before. Unreal Engine 5 also introduces a collection of groundbreaking features for rendering real-time worlds in incredible high-fidelity detail. Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that enables you to create believable scenes where indirect lighting adapts on the fly to changes to direct lighting or geometry—for example, changing the sun’s angle with the time of day, turning on a flashlight, or opening an exterior door. With Lumen, you no longer have to author lightmap UVs, wait for lightmaps to bake, or place reflection captures; you can simply create and edit lights inside the Unreal Editor and see the same final lighting your players will see when the game or experience is run on the target platform. Not to be outdone, UE5’s new virtualized micropolygon geometry system, Nanite, gives you the ability to create games and experiences with massive amounts of geometric detail. Directly import film-quality source art comprised of millions of polygons—anything from ZBrush sculpts to photogrammetry scans—and place them millions of times, all while maintaining a real-time frame rate, and without any noticeable loss of fidelity.

UE5 just makes your eyes go "yeah that looks right"

but it's like you can't really point out any flaws in UE4 until you see UE5 and then it just looks wrong.

the Lumen definitely makes the environment more immersive

The new GI is light years better in indoor/cavernous scenarios than UE4, wow! If anything, UE4 actually still holds up well, but I have a feeling as more people get more experience in harnessing the best features of UE5, it’ll only get better looking from here. Can’t wait to see where we’re at 3-4 years from now!

Remember guys, nanite doesnt work on foliage yet. Just wait until it does.

Hmm, the most noticable is better details in highlights.. . seems like lights are more accurate now, fog doesn't wash out everything. But I dunno, the flaws are so little for a well lit scene, UE4's holding up pretty well tbh. I'm living for not needing normal maps though

These videos are so immersive. I love them. They're so peaceful and put me in a meditative zen like state.

This is a very good lighting demonstration. Really though, this doesn't utilise quixel scans which UE5 is centred around

its crazy how the smallest change to the lighting drastically changes a scene. Cool video!

UE4 made the scene looked like the lighting hit everywhere while UE5 sharpen the scenes as well as did a phenomenal job with the shadow rendering.

I feel like the dark point is too high in UE5 - but still really really amazing!

To be honest, the UE4 version still looks bloody good. The UE5 one brings out more detail where it's obvious, such as the leaves in the trees and on the ground. The UE5 version softens the shadows too much in this scene in my opinion, although I don't know if that's UE5 _per se_ or just a setting that's different.

Make it more alive in a way I can't really explain, the lumen and something more

5 has more natural feeling of depth and the lighting and shadows feel much more like what you would see in the real world, not with a camera, but with your eyes. I guess that is the biggest thing? It is more like seeing through your eyes than a camera. 👏

Would love to see some comparisons with RT on. I feel like some stuff in ue5 look way better, and others are just different. Like rocks and bounced light looks really good, but then when you turn on reflections or translucency some things look awful. Like glass and the materials with the groom system.

Would be really interesting to also see the performance of both scenes side by side.
