We are aware of Avid discontinuing the free version of Pro Tools, Pro Tools First. This is disappointing to us and we hope that Avid will offer a free version again sometime in the future. It seems that if you already had access to PT First that you will still have access to it now. But if you are trying to acquire it new from a included bundle or something similar, you won't be able to.

We still believe that our video provides an incredible step-by-step process of how to record a song from start to finish, regardless of the DAW you use to the plugins you have available. Our process here can help give guidance to those who are just starting out and provide some direction for anyone who may not know where to start.

We feel the same about our mixing videos that go along with this series (linked below). Although you can't get Pro Tools First along with all the free plugins anymore, they do provide a good overview of the mixing process and guidance in how to do this process. Enjoy!

-18 dB is around where you want your record level to be so you heave enough headroom to add things like compression.

Pro Tools First: Make sure pro tools is in punch mode, go up here to the record button, right click and press quick punch. Next open up the transport window. select pre-roll, select the amount of bars it plays before recording. Make sure the track is enabled, and then start recording.

Logic: Press 'R'

Really good concept for a video form factor. Anyone who has gone so far as to look at the specs of the various Focusrite Scarlett line of devices is looking for practical knowledge without having to earn it the painful (and potentially expensive) way. Hey Pixel, I'll be purchasing my first recording equipment this week. Researching over 3 years to understand recording process (still learning)... but this video sealed the deal for me. I truly love everything about your song, the easy to understand instructions, and good vibes that come through. I've been toying with the 2i2 as I've recently started playing guitar and keys again. I also just had a good day, so plumped for the 2i2 studio bundle with the Scarlett CM25 mic and headphones... basically what you used here, but the full 2-channel version. I reckon it will be more than enough for my current standard. Basically I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video tutorial because it really is down to earth and inspiring. Thank you 🙏🏼
