MP40 stands for Maschinenpistole 40.
You're welcome.

first one is the mp40 9mm, stalemate of the german army during the entire second world war, the second one is the m3, an American smg in 45acp, also known as the "grease gun" due to the similarity of mechanics tool. a more cost effective solution for the m1a1 Thompson. it was used late in the second world war. fun fact: the OSS (american special forces of ww2) made a very effective suppressor specifically for this weapon for covert operations

The reason the M3 is known as a grease gun is because many soldiers during ww2 thought it looked similar to a actual grease gun they'd use back home

"Mom can we buy MP40?"
"No we have MP40 at home"

MP40 and Grease Gun, the Grease Gun was a replacement for the Thommy gun and the MP40 was nearly in danger to replaced by the STG44

I HAVE Actually had to clear this specific confusion up with my Dad, because he just called both of them "grease-guns".

It's a barrel 90 cal chambersed in 7.62x85 that utilizes a pistol brace, making it a gun of mass lethal deadlyness

The MP-40 was a brilliant design for its time. It allowed German soldiers to cheaply and easily have added firepower available to them. The M3 Grease Gun was great because it came in a more powerful cartridge, and could be made in mass by the US on the cheap to help supply the resistance, and other factions that needed a lot of guns quickly

I was a member of the very first 19K class and back then the M3 was still part of our BII (phased out by M16A2) so I qualified with it in basic. It was a blast to fire. .45 cal, 230 grain FMJ, full auto fun. Cheers from America!

The sheet metal one is most well know as a grease gun given to tankers.

The m3 grease gun was actually a replacement of the not too well known m2 submachine gun, and it was found to be easier manafactured and costed almost 2 times less to manafacture then the Thompson submachine gun. Only about 400 m2's were actually made because the U.S had started to adopt the m3.

My dad had an M3 Grease Gun when he was a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne in Korea. He said you had to hold the gun sideways because the recoil and accuracy was so bad, so you turned it sideways and spray 'n pray the enemy.

Every BF5 Medic player used these guns at least once

That's the German MP40 and the American M3A1 " grease gun ", both made of steel stampings.

Open bolt action to facilitate fully automatic fire. That’s cooler than “stamped metal”.

Fun fact: A Chinese version for the M3 grease gun was produced to fire a larger calibre for the Chinese Nationalists and then the Chinese communists after capturing the factory they were produced in. It has went on to serve in the Korean war against its American counterpart.

Queue the scene from "The Lost Battalion":

"This is a French cho-cho."
"Chauchat."
"It's a piece of garbage; whatever!"

Lmao!

If someone confuses a MP40 for a M3 or vic versa in front of me, I'm throwing hands

M3 grease gun was made as a cheap replacement for the thompson (I think 1 thompson could make like 10 grease guns)
Not only was it cheap, it was also easier to store and it was the weapon of choice to paradrop to resistance fighters

Another weird fact, the grease gun's dust cover is its safety
