Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. After 14 months of SUV living - I bought the van I now call home. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world, while also having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

**My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 62K miles**

I've been a longtime follower on instagram, but I'm new to the longer format content (and YouTube in general). You are my first content creator I've watched, and if this is what it's like, WHAT have I been MISSING!? The last three videos, aside from being beautiful and serene, have literally evoked a gutteral SCREAM from me, because it feels like y🎉ou are actually reading out my thoughts straight from my brain! I'm talking, a whole Killing Me Softly moment: straight up strumming my pain, flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd.
Letters found.
Read out loud. 😂

But SERIOUSLY, thank you for sharing. I already slid into your Insta DMs to express the same gist of this comment. But it's worth two long-winded thank yous. So. THANK YOU.

Sixteen years ago, I met my wife while living in Virginia. I am originally from Wisconsin, she's from Washington State. We are both prior military so we've traveled and lived in more places than we can even begin to remember. One day she asked me, of all the places I've lived, where would I prefer to spend the rest of my life. My answer was simple. I didn't care. I had never lived in one place that I absolutely wanted to stay. I had never lived in a place that I considered home. They were always just places I've been and really didn't care if I was ever there again or not. Seven years ago, we flew out to the Oregon coast to visit her parents. We flew into Portland late in the evening and drove with her parents to their house. I was exhausted and could barely keep my eyes open for the ride so it wasn't until that next morning that I actually saw where I was, and, it hit me. Hard! I stood there in my in-laws kitchen and looked out at the mountains with the inversion layer cutting everything in half. The peace, the tranquility and the view. It hit me. My wife brought me a cup of coffee and asked me why I was crying. I told her I was home. Three years ago we bought our home on the Oregon coast with a view of the mountains and the salty breeze in the air, and I'll be here until the day I die.

I hope you find your space here. There's healing in these mountains and inspiration in the waves. It's home for those of us that have never found another.

This home. The dog. The environment. It suits you. This is it. It's not what you think you can't afford, it's what you will figure it out and make it work.

I'm in love with the pacing of your films. So refreshing to not be bombarded with constant jump cuts and endless dialogue. You leave space to breathe in the landscape, time to absorb your ideas and calm settings to ponder your thought provoking questions.

Thank you for featuring the Pacific Bin house in your video, which is located in Sultan, WA. Being surrounded by trees in a forest with hiking trails around makes it a perfect place to relax, and explore nature.

man, no video has made me miss Washington more than this one. I remember when I first moved there from Nevada, the trees made me feel claustrophobic. Since moving back to Nevada after over 20 years in Washington, I miss nothing more than those beautiful, lush, mossy trees and forests.. it makes my heart hurt, missing it. Thanks for this video.

Even a shot in the dark, creates a flash that if pointed in the right direction will be seen.

You are putting yourself in a vibrational place of receiving all that you are asking for, so it will be. 💫🌅

Thank you for being the only Vanlife channel I’ve come across where it’s an attractive, younger woman, yet doesn’t feel the need to constantly show ass shots as the only redeeming quality. Pure class and substance.

I lived in a small cabin in Suquamish. It was on an older woman's property and she lived in the big house. In many ways I loved it, but that damp cold in Western Washington I could never get warm. But now I see after watching this video, if I could live with hot tub sauna, better insulation and not have to commute to work those woods would be pretty dreamy in the winter after all. This is so huge for you Christian because this is the first time I have ever really seen you make a decisive decision that this is where you'd want to have a homebase. And it was the first video of yours I watched on van life that helped me decide that I really want a homebase. It was the one where you got to stay in the airbnb cabin in Montana and you said your work ethic was solid. I totally related to that and it helped me relax about why I don't get much work done on the road. Here's to us getting our home base dream 🥂

You have been transparent to viewers about what makes you “tick” as a person. And you have been open in the past while about how you are more and more interested in having a home base. You mentioned how you never thought you would be making this step on your own. But I think deep down that you wouldn't have it any other way. By making this decision as an individual, you stay true to yourself. And if you choose to share that with someone, you can protect your individuality. Who this decision to find a plot to make roots may bring you so much more than just a home that's not on wheels. And you will always have the van to “escape” and get away when you need to have a reset. I hope that you just enjoy the moment without overthinking and sabotaging your plans for the future. Allow yourself to have the win. We all deserve that joy - including you.

Please do a video on everything you learned about buying land to help out the rest of us!! Loved this video, one of my favorites. Interesting how our nomadic hearts eventually find a stronger pull for stability. This theme seems to be something that happens to most, and i wonder what it is we learn during these times of travel, how we change to prefer something new. Love your channel!

Found your channel by watching Timmy at Truckhouse Life. You said you had lived in Issaquah, WA so that peaked my interest because I live in North Bend, 15 miles away. Am retired but stories like yours bring back all my dreams of what could have been had I had the courage to reach out and actually do what you are doing now. I loved the cabin in the woods, how peaceful and serene it is. Looking forward to catching up and watching all your previous videos.
