No Self-defense allowed in schools is stupid. What am I supposed to do, let the bully punch me in the face till I get knocked out, or ruin my future for putting common sense in the bully. Supposed to stop violence, this policy can be taken advantage of by bullies that normally break the rules, because they know that this allows them to torment people without getting embaraced themselves.

FUN FACT:

California had banned homework in 1901 for kids under 15 for the kids mental health but they unfortunately abolished it

Teacher here, my 2 cents.

* Hoodie: No idea why this is a rule, probably some administrative reason like not being able to recognize kids at a glance. I hated this rule in elementary because my mom would give me catholic boy buzz cuts and my ears would always be freezing off but the teachers still wanted my hood off.

* Bathroom: Personally I've never straight up denied a bathroom request I'll just ask kids to wait for a stopping point in class or for the next kid to come back. Bad groups of kids will absolutely abuse bathroom privileges then you've got admin on your ass for the 3+ kids out of class causing trouble or smoking or meeting their girlfriends or whatever

* Food: I'm always fine with food normally. I've had bad groups of kids though that would leave half eaten apples on the floor and no one will fess up to it. Had to get admin involved that time because they had to have their snacks at that time.

* Dress code: Never dealt with uniforms this in public schools.

* Homework: I only ever give homework as additional practice, especially when some kids really need to drill some concept to get more fluent.

* School start time: 100% agree its too early. Its an administrative issue that teachers can't control and there's too many moving parts like parents' work schedules and bus routes for me to do anything about it unfortunately. Back in my day the kids that take community college classes instead of high school generally won't take any class before 9AM if they can help it.

* School detention: Never dealt with this one

* No self defense: 100% agree you should be able to fight back. However some kids will interpret shit talk as fighting words and that can get messy. In high school I hit one kid back that hit me and we were both in pain and he never did it again LOL.

* Attendance: I won't mark kids tardy if they get there before I finish attendance, more so if its after and its interrupting what I'm doing. Every now and then not a big deal but if its several times a day or a pattern then its a problem.

Overall message: I basically agree that the needs for kids are a lot different now and I'm seeing a lot of positive things at the schools I work at like taking community college classes for an AA degree instead of high school classes or taking classes at a trade school.

Trying to change systems where you're just one cog in a big machine is tough and sometimes impossible. Teachers that are able to make their classes interesting and genuinely help their students are the _best_.

The worst part about homework is the fact that it was originally made by a teacher as a PUNISHMENT for his students

Like a wise man once said some rules are meant to be broken from the hood up rule to no water rule to no phones rule to no bathroom rules

Dude the self defense rule is horrible, I litteraly got hit and jumped and yet I fought back and they was bouta give me a ticket until I had to explain my way out of it, and then some girl threw a Powerade bottle at my eye and bro I pushed back and yet I was the end who got in trouble (I’m cool with the girl now) but in all seriousness shame on greenfield high school

The main reason there's so much homework is that there needs to be a substantial amount of grades in your gradebook. If homework didn't exist, flunking one test would tank your grade the whole semester. Homework isn't really the problem, its the grading system as a whole.

One time in middle school the school principal came into my English class in order to enforce a few rules, as she likes to do. When she told off a student for having a hood on (in the middle of the winter in a classroom with no AC's mind you), she followed that up by explaining that she doesn't allow hoods because, and I quote: *"The culture of wearing your hood up comes from very particular streets in America, we don't do that here."*

Adding to the getting in trouble for being late thing, we recently had a lesson on disruptions and arriving to homeroom late was one of them. Buses are late all the time and we are the ones who take the blame, get embarrassed and scolded by our teachers because the bus driver was late. School is stupid and I cant wait to be done.

My principal is deciding to waste 2million dollars on a stupid 8ft fence instead of using it to make the school look better and he keeps lying to our asses.

*how do you know this?* you wonder

*there was literally a hornets nest in one of the classrooms nearby last year and several kids were severely allergic and all he did was say sorry about it and didn't do anything til 2 weeks later. his hobby is dress coding people every 2-4 days*

When a boss denies an employee the right to use the bathroom: It's a human rights violation
When a teacher denies a student the right to use the bathroom: It's just discipline
So glad I've graduated.

Teachers cant legally prevent you from leaving the classroom in general, they can write you up but theres absolutely nothing they can do to prevent you from leaving that classroom

Homework was originally designed as a punishment for ancient greek and roman children, schools keep it because they think it will give students a learning advantage (only effective for some people)

Once i asked my teacher if i could go to the bathroom, and she did the whole, "idk can you?" Yes thats why i asked YOU, she said no and that i should have gone before class. I decided it was bad enough and just straight-up pissed in my chair. She never told me no to the bathroom again (i should also mention i was in first - or second grade)

MY school has a system where you have to finish all the work in your classes before you can leave detention.. REGARDLESS if youve done your time.
