When I went to Japan they had way lighter security it's insane, they had boxes on their customs checklist that were labeled with, "are you a terrorist"

I remember getting on a plane a year before 9/11 and a year after 9/11. A year before 9/11, my father carried a .50 cal rifle onto the plane and they only asked him to confirm that it wasn't loaded. Nobody actually checked. That was his carry on. A year after 9/11, and Germany had sent some of their soldiers to help "secure" the airport. That was the first time I ever saw an automatic rifle in person.

My favorite story about pre 2001 security is from a coworker going through Hawaii. The security guard had fallen asleep in his folding chair and none of them wanted to wake him up so they just went through.
