Throughout WoW’s history many events and characters have come and gone. Some were incredibly iconic and some not so much. In this Top 10 list we’re going to be counting down the most brutal deaths in WoW’s history. When talking about “brutal” it’s going to be moments that downright just look painful to experience or would just leave the player completely shocked at how messed up an event was. Some will be big named characters and others not.

As a long-time and staunch Horde player, the death of Varian Wrynn was absolutely brutal. He was one of the few Alliance members I had a lot of respect for and watching his death in Legion made me respect his character even more.

I'm surprised that Varimathras didn't make it on this list, seeing how after he failed at summoning Sargeras during WotLK he was brutally tormented in Antoras, the Burning Throne for his failure until the player characters put an end to him and his suffering.

Yseras death, for me, is the most memorable death in the whole game. The dragon lore is my favorite, so seeing her fall was heart-wrenching! Definitely deserved the spot on this list!

No honorable mention for Crusader Bridenbrad? He went through essentially wow chemo therapy, and still died. Rip

You did Theramore, but I will contend that the burning of Teldrassil was as horrific as it got. I played through both and I literally cried as I couldn't save everyone and knew they would burn to death. I am not sure, still to this moment, that I can forgive Sylvanas completely. My very first character was night elf and I have such memories of her (started in 08 at BC). Of course, Varian's death hit hard, so did Ysera's. Blizz just keeps messing with our emotions.

Let's face it: the most brutal death is when players misjudge how high up something is.

I actually cry watching Varian’s death cinematic. The music in the background as you watch your king get turned into a cloud of fel energy. After all the expansions that he was featured in, that death can’t be anything but 1 in my book for the emotion it brings forth

Am I the only one who thinks Saurfang should be on the list?
yeah his death wasn't percived as brutal, but i wouldn't want to go through it either he never knew if anything he did was meaningfull, he had to give up everything over and over again ending with his life in the end, that is in my opinion more brutal than anything. And he didn't even get his wish granted to die like a warrior in a mak'gora since sylanas vaporizes him with magic

Unreasonably bothers me whenever I see someone still saying that using magic in a Mak'gora is cheating: it's not.
The only things unallowed in a Mak'gora are whatever the fighters agree to ban when they have their fight
When Baine and Garrosh fought they agreed on single weapon combat - Garrosh "cheated" because his weapon was poisoned without his knowledge
In the movie, Guldan didn't even cheat when he used magic, it was just fel magic and fucked up beyond anything the rest of the orcs had seen and they all had a visceral reaction to it
In the Wrath pre-patch when Thrall and Garrosh fight for the first time in Org, Thrall uses magic. No one complained, because it was totally fine for him to do that.
Thrall frying Garossh in Nagrand wasn't cheating.

Where is Zuni??!! No joke for me was the most painfull death as player. (He was the troll friend who accompanied you in the initial troll area in case anyone doesn't know him by name.)

SL and DF kinda made ysera death pointless, really wish they just went with Ysera being reborn or becoming one with the dream and cannot leave

Honourable mention to the ghost NPCs outside Scholomance? Repeatedly killed and resurrected by ghouls at the command of the Butcher amongst many other things.

I've always been a horde player, but Varian went out like a fking G! A good heroic death with a bad ass line will always get me lol.

I am... confused by your description of Theramore. While its founder was technically Kul Tiran, Theramore was _not_ a Kul Tiran state. It was an independent City State founded by Jaina, and _forcibly taken over_ temporarily by her father Daelin. After whose death, rule returned once more to Jaina, who was declared an enemy of Kul Tiras for her part in Daelin's death (that being, for the most part, standing back and doing nothing to stop it, and indeed inviting the Horde in)

I would add my boy Uther. Beaten bloody and broken by Arthas. When he is stabbed, his soul is literally ripped in two causing his soul in SL to have a huge gash in his chest, which still years later causes immense pain

What i really like in the cinematic at 9:55 you see gul'dans expression change a bit, like he is thinking "damn he is stronger than i thought" and intensifies the fel. It shows that Varian has such a strong spirit, it startles even one of the most powerful warlocks in the lore.

5:24 Just a note to the editor that sais Thrall cheated.. I would like to point out to you that's a Warcraft movie thing.. And the movie isn't canon.

Varian’s death was the best one and the most sad for me. An excellent leader who sacrificed himself for his men, fought until death, and didn’t let Gul’Dan break his spirit in the end.
