And this is one of the many reasons why we adore the *chemistry & charisma of Sebastian Rios, Abdias Armenteros, and TJ Reddick* — the members of the *New Jazz Underground.*

These cats are making masterful music & supplying us with mantras, while they’re at it.


However, don’t be mistaken:

The trio’s depth exposes the limitations of the four letter word, that’s used to describe the Black American music tradition.
Their art is committed to preserving a legacy without loopholes.
There are no shortcuts. . .

The goal ? —
Make it *New.*

They aren’t here to reinvent the wheel.
Yet, they’re swinging their axles off —*driving deeper into the roots of this tradition.* 🔥⚙

The New Jazz Underground consistently *invites excellence into their sphere, * where each member humbly holds the privilege of working with luminaries of this tradition. 🙏🏽🔥🎹


This session in Emmet’s living room represents a *collaboration of cats who transformed a digital space, when artistry was threatened & inspiration was running dry.* ⛲🎭

They stretched our panorama during the pandemic — helping to prove what was possible.

This same objective was shared by *Open Studio as a down-to-earth, online community* — enabling folks to learn with the legends, while bridging a gap between skill, location, & resources.

What a bass player! Omg. Sebastian Rios what a find! He’s going to be one of the greats. I have a feeling him and Emmet will be playing a lot more together. Drummer is awesome also, such sensitive touch, not playing too loudly, so perfectly balancing the band dynamics. Emmet as always is amazing. But honestly Sebastian Rios is one of the best bassists I’ve ever heard. Great job guys 👏

This is what I am talking about...a kick ass jazz session with the new generation taking the forefront of an amazing music genre. Just from San Francisco Bay Area!!!! I have my port and cigar just jivin to this jam session

This is cool and these guys are great. Real music and real musicianship. I'm 66 and find this music grounding and stimulating and relaxing. I'm from the SF Bay Area and saw a lot of concerts of every type of music on all levels during the 70's and 80's. Lots of TV On The Radio hybrids, all thoughtful. I saw Brubeck and BB King on the same bill in the late 80's and Stevie Wonder, Madonna and Prince twice. I saw Prince twice the same night; an 8pm arena show in Oakland then a 2am intimate show at SF's Warfield Theater. Rosie Gaines graduated my year from my high school and fronted Prince's New Power Generation band before gaining her own following as a solo artist. Curt Ohlson graduated a year ahead of me and played bass for Ray Charles before going solo. Stevie Wonder shocked us by performing at my high school for Black History Month in 1973 at the height of his "Taking Book" album. The son of Arif Mardin lived in my NYC building. I have lived a life immersed in and adjacent to music without being a musician myself. It's life-affirming to know young people are still playing and composing jazz music. It took until my retirement to find the time to actually enjoy my massive jazz music collection and now I can watch jazz performances of those guys from every decade on YouTube, which is a dream. Focusing on jazz and just having it on as background are different experiences. YouTube is becoming my main streaming platform because of videos like this. So much viscerally satisfying stuff. Like this post.
