Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

The Chagos Islands situation is rather peculiar. The islanders were removed to allow the naval base at Diego Garcia, which is leased to the US Navy. The Islanders live in the UK or Mauritius, where they are not well-treated. Therefore the islands should be given to the islanders or their descendents, who could either move back or get some money from the US to continue the lease. The problem is that China would probably outbid the US to gain the naval base.

Hi Connor, about the names on the map: different languages have different names for other countries, we don’t all use the American/English names, so it’s probably what they are called in Portuguese. I look forward to Jägarsoldat ep. 5. 😊 About your usual ’might is right’ argument. With your reasoning Russia would just take Ukraine, and nobody would help them, but that’s not the case. Ukraine is not in the EU, or in Nato, so we are not obligated to help them. Of course it’s not just because it’s right, it’s also to defend ourselves against Russia, but it’s not just that. You have a very cynical view of the world.

Building an island in international waters is not a loop hole, it is wishfull thinking. If it were not then the UK, the USA or anyone else could do so anywhere in the world! Building it in your national waters does not extend your national waters. Unfortunately force no longer provides for ownership, as the international community will not condone it as they have not done as regards the Crimea. Defence is relevant but attacking a country is not.
