On the eve of Star Wars Celebration 2022 and the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi, let's talk about the best movie of the Disney Star Wars era: Rogue One. The Disney Star Wars era has been...a disappointment to say the least. That being said, early on in this new age of Star Wars movies, they kind of had the right idea. In theory, these one off, spin-off, Star Wars Story adventures allowed for us to visit any point in the Star Wars timeline, spend time with new and interesting characters, and add to the overall mythology of the Star Wars universe. Gareth Edwards' Rogue One was the perfect version of this. I've long felt that Rogue One A Star Wars Story marked the pinnacle of Star Wars under the regime of Kathleen Kennedy. It had the unmistakable trademark of it's director, a compelling narrative with a great group of characters you can get behind, AND it deconstructed the very nature of the Galactic Civil War conflict and the truths we thought we knew. Rebels become bad guys, Imperials become heroes, it's a story that examines the gray area of a universe spanning conflict and rediscovering the reason for the fight, believing in hope. Rogue One is the best star wars movie, in my opinion, because it reminds me of what I love most about Star Wars with an added commentary that understands, things aren't always so straightforward. This is also the best star wars movie because for the first time arguably ever, we get a straight up war film in the Star Wars universe, a movie that puts the WAR in Star Wars making for the greatest climax to a Star Wars movie ever. Love this take. Especially in the context of ROTJ and the recent [Ahsoka spoiler]. People are complaining Anakin didn't deserve a Force ghost, that one good deed doesn't absolve two decades of evil, that Vader was cowardly in choosing to die rather than face the consequences of his actions. Those people miss the point of the message: it's never too late to do what you know is right. It went for Andor as well, a man consumed by the guilt of what it cost him to get as far as he did, and he chose to give up his own well being to secure hope for the rest of the galaxy. Andor is not so different from Vader in that way. You can never undo what's already done, but you can always let go of everything holding you back, of the pride and ego that chains you to the sunk-cost fallacy of past selfishness and hunger for power and control.

I think rogue one also makes a new hope more enjoyable too, because it is reinforced by the sacrifice at the battle of scarrif (hope i spelled that right)

Edit: Saying its the best is a tough statement to back up, but it’s definitely up there. Its in my top 3 favorites.

I personally find the film to be too disjointed and not enough character focus. It's one of my least favorite Star Wars films.

It speaks volumes that R1 is hands down the best Disney Star Wars movie and Andor is the best Disney Star Wars show (if not one of the best shows of all time)

the last act is phenomenal from a visual standpoint, everything else is is kinda meh with some good points here and there. My biggest problem is just how bad the characters are written however.

It’s one of my least favorite Star Wars films. Visually it’s beautiful but I can’t connect to any of these characters in the film except for andor a little bit. Battle of scarif is cool to watch but that’s about it for me.

i constantly tell people that rogue on is NOT the best star wars movie. but it is the best movie star wars has made. no other movie in star wars matches the overall quality and narrative as a standalone film but in terms of star wars movies there are other movies that are better star wars
