When my standard poodle was little guy and we were out in the world observing and learning about new things through socialisation, I often sat crouched right behind him. We did this a lot. Now he sometimes comes up to sit right in front of me when I'm on the ground, seemingly seeking comfort and protection. Sometimes I stroke his shoulders or even hold him gently while we do this, but mostly we just chill. That's our hug. And I think it truly feels right for both of us. I don't really initiate it myself anymore, but let him in when he asks.

in my interactions with animals I learned to let them ask for cuddles not go into them... and each one has his/her sensitivities (some want to rub our faces but fear belly rubs while others are terrified by head to head approach yet roll on their backs and adore belly rubs etc.).

Great video! I totally agree with your points . In my experience, I've also found that your tips can be really helpful. For more details on that, I made a video about it on my channel The Pet Perspective.

By the way! I caught on to something yesterday. Asper has a favourite toy that we take outside to throw around. And he's been playing keepaway a lot until I get bored of running after him and sit down. That's when he gives me the today. And it twigged for me yesterday - my dog's using reward-based learning and is teaching me sit! Have you ever heard of that before??

Hugs, physical contacts are a primates 'trait including humans'.. It's not a canid's attitude.. I personally respect this with my dog and let him initiate contacts if he wants cuddles or scratches for example, dogs love scratches behind the ears, on their flanks, base of the rails more than being held for hugs.. They love interactions with us.. They show signs of affection their own way..

I think it is important to be an older "brother" or 'sister" to a dog than a parent alpha male or female. In a park one of us would sit down or lie down, and the other would flop beside. An older litter-mate is still respected by a dog, so you should have no discipline problems. And sometimes, be a 'dog'. This includes the "play crouch". My rescue dog was tense at first, but the play crouch makes you less human, because if they have been abused by a human, acting a little more like a dog is good for them.
So in the park, lay belly up next to them. They know you are giving them the opportunity to gut you with their teeth and claws.
The belly-up mode is a dog sign of submission, but I have never met a dog yet that did not both appreciate the gesture OR take advantage of it. I had my first dog before I could walk [really my parent's dog but whatever].
The time to allow a dog a "dominant" gesture [such as a paw over you], and for you to do the same for the dog, or a human arm over their body is after MUTUAL TRUST has been established.
Although you are the leader, you consult. I asked my dogs on the walk: "which way next?", so you go that way. Having had their turns at deciding where the "pack" will go, you get to decide to head home, although if it is a minute too soon, you may have some objections!
