I love that you always talk about how the machines perform in software development 👍 Most of the reviews/comparisons out there only touch the topic of software engineering or omit it completely and just focus on video editing.

Greetings from another software developer from Germany. Keep up the great work 💪

Base Mac Studio + MacBook Air. Best combo for both desk and travel.

So it all boils down to: do you want a desktop or a laptop?

I'm a photographer and used the M1 Max Studio for a couple of weeks while my 2020 Intel i5 MacBook Pro was in the shop. I have this torture test that is from a client project. To export several hundred images in different sizes.

The Intel machine takes about 25 minutes to finish the project. The Mac Studio took LESS THAN 5 minutes! Which is even more impressive as the test has several 100MB+ TIFF files. And even better, takes just a little longer over a 10Gb/s network connection than if all the files were local.

I could never find the memory bandwidth specs for my Intel laptop. But I'm sure it's less than what you stated in your video. I was using an M1 MacBook Air for another project and with a measly 8GB of RAM, could run circles around my 2x more expensive Intel MacBook Pro. Amazing little machine and probably just fine for most office needs. Except maybe if you need dual-monitors....

Right now, at this level, it's really all about preference. I love the Mac Studio because it keeps things tidy on the desktop. I hate cables and docks like what I'm using now. And there is a cost to that and potential compatibility issues. It happens. Even with reputable companies. And I'll get a heavily discounted, M1 Max laptop... It's totally fine for remote, creative needs....

Great video!

This is exactly the comparison I needed right now. My Intel iMac bit the dust so I’ve been researching what to get to replace it. I was all set to get the Mac Studio, but I could really use a laptop for travel and onsite classes. Plus, if I get the Mac Book Pro right now, I can make do with the small screen until my next purchase of the Apple Studio Display. If I get the Mac Studio, I’ll have to spring for the monitor as well right away. It would be nice to have a comparison using Lightroom and Photoshop - especially really big Photoshop files. I often work on layered PS files over 1 TB.

I purchased the M1 Studio Max when it released and a few months ago treated myself to a refurbished M1 Pro MBP 14 for travel (I upgraded from a mid-2012 MBP 13). This fits my use case the best so I wouldn't chose one over the other.

It’s known now that the MBP 14” will suffer from thermal throttling after a period of time and you will hear the fan spin up. Whereas this is not an issue with the Mac Studio. It will perform better over an extended period of time and it will do so quietly.

I miss going into quiet coffee shops with my old 2017 MacBook fan's a blazing and my butterfly keyboard clicky clacking like a clog dancer. 😆

Fascinating, this is the comparison I was making the other day trying to figure out which would be more beneficial. Thanks for the video.

Going to keep my M1Max 16” MBP and wait for the M3 Mac Studio. Do wish a desktop Mac and maybe later have a Mx MBP 14” to travel with.

i think it would really depend on whether you had a good laptop already, in that case you may want to have a solid home base machine, you can always keep them both synced, instead of getting another laptop only slightly better, as with most apple stuff, than the previous models (which you may not even notice any performance gain despite the figures on paper). i would go with what allowed me to have the most amount of memory for the buck, as if you do any large file work, that will be very important - not having to have to use a hub is also nice... (sd card readers are always iffy as basically when you get one built in, it is just a usb device internally connected and the problem with that is most card readers prefer the sd card to be inserted before they are plugged in to a a usb port - the issue with apples built in studio one is likely a software-hardware issue (port does not initiate the mount or reset after use) which may require a firmware fix if possible (when you use an sd card in the camera, you power off the camera, insert card, and power back on). anyway, whenever i get a new macbook pro, it is always a performance disappointment from what i expected over what i already had - keep in mind when laptops get hot, they throttle so the performance will likely degrade when you start using the gpu, ssd, and ram quite a bit - it will add enough extra heat to cause the cpu to run in low performance mode... so there is you argument for the studio with it's great ventilation for continuous heavy use.

I got a Mac studio the day they were released. Awesome machine. I have the 14" MacBook Pro which is good for travel. But the Studio has the ports for my editing studio at home. I am thinking about upgrading when the new Mac Studios M3s are announced. It is the ray tracking that I need. It will be a plug-and-play to swap out the boxes. Love the size of the Studio.

14" M3 Pro, 36GB Ram with Studio Display is the sweet spot for my needs. It's really having the best of both worlds imo!
