In this video, I compare the performance of the M1 Max Mac Studio to the M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro to show you guys the downsides of going with the Mac Studio.

I also explain why I think your money could be better spent by going with the MacBook Pro instead.

If you dont NEED to be portable the choice seems pretty easy to me. Base model studio with education/mil pricing is ~$1799, while the equivalent macbook pro is nearly $3000. You can use that extra money to build a super nice desk setup

No, I don't want a MacBook Pro but a Desktop Mac. My Mac Studio arrives on Monday and then I better skip all these "Buy" and "Do not buy" videos for the next couple of months and just enjoy my new Mac. 🥰

Feels like click bait. If you want a desktop, paying ~$1000 more for an equivalent laptop makes no sense at all.
$1000 is NOT a "little bit more".

I pondered this for ages but ultimately decided to get an Air and a studio MAX instead of a 14” Pro MAX as it’s only slight more expensive.

No, the deal breaker for me is the ports. Instead I’ll get the base model studio on education pricing. I already have a display, Magic Mouse and keyboard. So this will save more for me instead of buying the MacBook.

As much as I love Max and Vadim and value their opinion, I personally ordered an M1 Max 32c 32GB 2TB Studio and it saved me over 100K Indian Rupee compared to the MBP of the same spec, and so I definitely don't agree that the Studio is not a good deal if you already have monitor and peripherals like me. Also, I think the clockspeed issue should get fixed with an update.

If you don't need to carry it around, methinks better to get a Mac Desktop, because the Macbook has a battery that goes bad &swells after about 5 years.

I thought the M1 Max on the Mac Studio would perform better. But what this actually boils down to is that for an additional $500 or so you can get a desktop system with an M1 Max (the Mac studio) and a 27" gorgeous screen, compared to the 16" inch Macbook Pro. That is, you choose: either you want something to take with you with a much smaller 16" screen (a Macbook) or a desktop system with a great 27" inch screen.

If cost is no concern, absolutely buy the MB Pro. But for everyone else, save the $1k and utilize the peripherals you already have. Not to mention if you ever need portability you can just pickup an M1 MacBook Air in a pinch for under $1k.

I ordered a M1 Ultra Mac Studio, but not because I need one. I wanted a powerful Mac desktop, and I really like the form factor, and it’ll last us years. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I got 25% + an extra $500 off… I’m really looking forward to using it. 😃👍🏻

If you plug your laptop into a monitor and work on a desk, the MBP is very poor value compared to a Studio. Spec for spec, studio is cheaper has better io and for most people who work in a study with a hub/monitor(s). The MBP spec’d out only really makes sense to individuals who work on the road . Most people I know who bought a laptop …. Used it a handful of times while not at home. One major factor, if you plan to drop $$$ a desktop will be more reliable and outlive a laptop, laptops all die from heat eventually, and have more components they can fail.

The mac studio would be way more compelling if the studio display was actually a good value. Studio display okay and looks well build but they are basically just ripping off their own customers.

I have never heard the words "bang for the buck" applied to Apple. I can give you a reason to buy a Studio over a Mac Book. I am 60. Though far from blind my eyes are not as good as they were when I was 30. I prefer a 27" screen.

Mac Studio + M1 MacBook Air is my current setup. The ultimate combo imo.

For those who don't want or need a laptop 3 words come to mind: context, connectivity and portability. The Max 1 chip is more than enough for creatives at a decent price if they already have a monitor and other essential peripherals. Which include audio interfaces etc. You never have to worry about batteries and using a laptop in clamshell mode still means you need to buy the connectivity. These are two separate products targeted to two separate audiences.

Desktop all the way for me. If I need mobility with a larger screen than my iPhone, I'll bring my iPad Pro.

Currently saving up for the Base model Studio with 64 gig memory upgrade (planning to use more VMs/virtualization.)

Better choice. Buying the Mac studio as it is 1000 dollar cheaper for the same price then use the rest get a portable laptop that could be windows (lightweight) or used/base model MacBook air

That’s why I still absolutely love my high end iMac Pro, still a workhorse for professional video editing on a daily basis without throttling whatsoever, even 4 years later.
