I always pull strings tight through the hole, then pull it back from the nut to the first fret for the proper length and winds on the post.

Steel wool on the fret board? Microfiber and lemonseed oil will make it shine without scratches...

Similar to what I do, no cutting at the sound hole, clean and polish, and no winder (I really should get one, one day.

I did not. But they got some recently. I didn't realise this was a thing!

How often should an acoustic guitar be restrung? To what extent does usage influence the ideal frequency of restringing?

As a bass player, it feels appropriate that I found this video about 10 months *after* World String Change Day...

I follow the Ten Commandments for Bassist.
Numbe10:- Thou shalt changeth thy strings at least once per decade, whether they need it or not.

Put the kink on the ball end of the string which stops popping the bridge pins out!😊 cheers Andrew

Is using an abrasive like steel wool on the fretboard necessary? Surely over the lifetime of the guitar you are just going to be wearing down the fretboard more than necessary. Cant you just use a cloth and some sort of cleaning agent (hopefully one that doesn't damage or dehydrate the wood).

It’s a Martin. Marten has a booklet on this. They do not recommend cuttings strings like this as it is a shock to the neck if it’s under tension. Also, they package their strings in pairs to suggest the sequence they should be changed in order for the neck to be tensioned evenly. I don’t follow the sequence myself, though. Too lazy.

My wife just got on old guitar that used to belong to her aunt. Some of the strings seem to be nylon, some are metal, one is broken and all of them need to be replaced.
Being a complete noob to guitars (i follow the channel for the woodworking), why would one choose one over the other?

Greetings from Barcelona, Spain. 34 years ago during my military service I had a colleague with a Spanish mother and a Japanese father. He was a luthier and one night on duty together I told him that I had to change the strings.
He convinced me to do it very slowly.
With extremely delicate arguments about how much the woods suffer when doing it all at once.
Since then he convinced me and it takes me three days to bring the strings to the tuning pitch.
And another three or four days to complete the cycle very slowly.
He told me with that Japanese gentleness that the woods suffer a lot.
