“A fully independent nation state.”

The Vatican is not a nation state. There is no Vaticanese people that have a state. The citizens of Vatican are not united by ethnicity (nation) but by religion and occupation in the Catholic Church. The Vatican is an independent state and country, but not a nation.

I love Vatican City: I got the opportunity to visit a few years ago and was overwhelmed by the beauty of the place.

This is very inaccurate . For centuries the Papal States was large approximately 1/3 of the entire Italy. On 20th September 1870 due to the Italian unification ( called Risorgimento ) the Italian troupes entered in Rome and the Pope went with his court in the Apostolic Palaces near Saint Peter basilica. The successive Popes remained secluded in the palaces refusing to recognise the Italian State until 1927 when Mussolini set an agreement with the Church. That’s why Vatican City is so small it is the end of the temporal power of the papacy.

I saw something strange! The Vatican Swiss guard doesn't to be photographed. When I was in the Vatican every time I tried to make a shot - they were hiding! But somebody succeeded!
