Imagine learning that selfishness is human nature by looking at people who have grown up entirely within a capitalist society, and then using that to justify why capitalism can't end. Circular.

Selflessness is as much a part of human nature as selfishness. Compassion and cruelty are both parts of nature. Saying "nature is all selfishness" is just as wrong as saying "nature is all peace and love and beauty." Similar to what Vaush said, if we were naturally merely selfish, we wouldn't have human society. It would have never started. But we see organization, i.e. society, across all times and parts of the world. Even the least technologically developed nomadic hunter-gatherer peoples have societies and everything that comes with them: languages, cultures, etc.

have actually been doing this recently since I've been working with the homeless and around a lot of conservative veteran types. I explain to them all the policies of socialism without ever using the word socialism, and it seems like they always seem to agree with me and think they're great ideas and would solve a lot of problems. hehe :)

I've found that people are much more likely to agree with socialist principles rather than the label.
Probably because if you ask 10 people what socialism is, you get 15 answers ^^

For the selfish is human nature I always like to use the Rouse argument. Natural man and Civilized man. Basically man is selfish and has endless desires but there is a point where he needs his fellow man to fulfill desires he can’t do on his own practically. So this is a reep what you sow along with you and your fellow workers do the work to achieve a goal not some third person that owns the whatever. You and the workers did it. Pretty sure Marx was inspired by Rouse now that I think about it

Small correction: Eusocial insects are often extremely selfless. The vast majority won't even reproduce; they exist only to serve the needs of the colony at large. They will often work themselves into an early grave, and will frequently use downright suicidal battle tactics before allowing the colony to come to harm. That being said, the ability of humans to coordinate, cooperate and engage in selfless acts was indeed a key element of our success; it created a single species that could easily adapt to almost any environment, and now has a presence on all seven continents.

I think this should be a longer segment. I’ve heard these talking points said over and over again about capitalism and I would rebuttal with what Vaush is talking about but whoever I argue with always finds a way to bring it back to the main simple point. In the end it is a circle or talking points that does not end

If people say your basic human rights policies makes you Socialist, as if it was a bad thing, say that you rather sacrafice the term if it means these basic policies. It takes away their ammo

Ants will literally blow themselves up, build bridges and homes with their bodies and become doors or food barrels for the sake of their colony.

Were pretty solid as far as cooperation and selflessness goes, but we aint ants.

I say focus on ending corporate exploitation. Every worker is a shareholder in the business they work in. Everyone has a stake in success. No separation between owners and employees. Everyone is a colleague.

I wouldnt say that selfishness is human nature, but i feel that it may be in the nature of many people that also have the personality traits and drive to become political leaders

Which policies would you suggest we advocate that are socialist that people won't call socialist? I can think of a couple, for example giving workers first right of refusal on businesses they work at/the option of pooling retirement funds to buy it and turn it into a coop in the case that it goes bankrupt, but I'm curious what else would fit under this rhetorical strategy.
