At the start of the civil war. The North's economy was 5times bigger than the south's economy. So, it is quite likey that slavery actually hindered the growth and expansion of the south's economy. In fact the cotton crops didn't really take off until the invention of the cotton gin. It was this innovation that spurred what little growth they had. The Industrial Revolution was created because wealthy European women wanted to look good in clothes and that began a ping pong match of innovation between the weavers and loomers in Europe. This is not debatable. It’s historic fact that is taught in every engineering school in the nation. Including mine.

The products they were improving wasn’t cotton but mostly silks front the orient. This is where everybody goes stray with the slavery caused the IR. The process didn’t even include cotton until it had already been in place and other industries began looking at the textile industry for innovative approaches.
