Former President Barack Obama is on familliar turf on Tuesday as he attends the Democratic convention in Chicago, where he'll throw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris' White House bid. In their highly anticipated prime-time speeches, the Obamas are expected to help clearly "pass the torch" to Kamala Harris, who will be holding a rally in Milwaukee this evening ahead of her acceptance speech Thursday night.
Barack Obama will headline the list of primetime convention speakers, which also includes former first lady Michelle Obama, current and former Republicans who now back Harris, prominent Democratic lawmakers and more.
Their remarks come after President Joe Biden delivered an emotional address on Monday, reflecting on his tenure in politics and passing the torch to his vice president.
Biden said the 2024 race for the White House offered Americans the chance to "vote for freedom" and democracy before turning to some of his administrations accomplishments – ranging from student debt forgiveness to cutting some health care prices for seniors.
Before the Obamas take the stage Tuesday, the DNC will feature speeches from second gentlemen Doug Emhoff, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to the convention's schedule. Maryland Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks will deliver the keynote remarks.
Remarks are also expected from former Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, as well as Jason Carter and Jack Schlossberg, the grandsons of former Presidents Jimmy Carter and John F. Kennedy, respectively.
