Barack Obama, who was the Illinois Democratic Senate candidate at the time, delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, catapulting him into the spotlight. Obama famously said in the speech on July 27, 2004, "There's not a liberal America and a conservative America, there's the United States of America. There's not a Black America and White America and Latino America and Asian America, there's the United States of America."

How in Gods name do you pass the baton of governance from this man to Donald Trump.

I'll never forget this night. My father had just passed away. I was a Republican back then, but I said, "This man will be President someday."

I'm here after hearing Lawrence O'Donnell's comments that when he saw Obama speak at the '04 DNC, he knew who was going to be the first black president. I can certainly see why.

Hard to believe that this is from 20 years ago.

Every once in a while, I pull up this speech to get me motivated both when I'm up and when I'm down. Hope is always there!

Who's here after another great DNC speech by Obama 20 years later?

So 9, 500 other joined me in re-watching this video after hearing about it during/after 2024 DNC. COOL! It still resonates the same as it did two decades ago. ❤

The speech that made Obama THE President "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America—there is the United States of America. There is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America—there's the United States of America."

Imagine if Obama had Trump's resume at that time doing the things that Trump is allowed to get away with now, oh, Fox News would blow a gasket.

I'm pretty jaded and don't usually react too emotionally to a political speech, even when I love the message and content. But I can still vividly recall the strong visceral reaction I had watching this speech. I knew I was looking at a future POTUS right then and there. Just amazing....

I looked for this speach because MSNBC talked about how Barack was one of main speaker for the 2004 DNC and people start noticing him; Omg his speech was powerful and emotional, I was touch with his speach.

Twenty years later, as a wiser nation prepares to vote in our first woman president, the hope in this man's heart and mind brings me to tears. We can do it, America, we can choose sanity, equality and a better future for our children. Harris - Walz 2024

There were things I did not like about Obama policy-wise, mostly minor things. But I will not lie a single bit and say that I was PROUD as an American that this man was elected President and he carried it well!

Obama just gave his speech at the 2024 DNC. I watched it live and he finished about 10 minutes ago. So I had to come back and watch this one, which was when we all "discovered" his amazing talents. Someone used the word "bookends" to compare the two speeches and this seems a fair assessment. His speech was also preceded by his wife Michelle, who delivered an equally if not even more heartfelt compelling message. Thank you Barack and Michelle, and wow I am so looking forward to casting my ballot for Kamala and Tim =)
