I love how hopeful yet sad Mercedes sounds, then the count starts to sing and there's so much anger and pain. Mercedes' hope turns into despair and Edmond's rage into sadness, a moment he shows weakness and they are in synchrony once again, loving, longing and regretting. Then he puts his walls between them again, but instead of just leaving, he kinda lingers for a little, as if hesitantly leaving her alone on the dance floor/stage.
The melody follows their feelings, Mercedes' parts are soft and slow like a love song, then Edmond's part has a heavy beating and a strong presence, showing his anger. When they're in synchrony, the melodies come together, full of heartbroken love. Then it goes almost silent, Edmond actually sings a line with no background music, to show that everything they had, any hope they had, was lost. Then the melody picks up again, both parts in synchrony but not because of love or longing, but because of despair.
All of their other songs together they are in synchrony, except for the start of this one, then they get that again, but not exactly because of the same reasons. And this is their last song together. It's beautiful.
No doubt my favorite song from this musical.

When you see your friend at McDonald's after they said they were at a funeral and couldn't hang out today

I really love the "Can either of us really ever be free" part for reasons I can't really explain.
This musical adapation also seems to place a heavier emphasis into the lost love between Mercedes and Edmund than the book.

can anyone else feel the despair once he starts singing? at the end of the song, EVERY time I hear it, I feel just a little bit more dead inside... there will probably not be another singer who could do this song justice after this performance.

i wish this Musical would be picked up my a major production company, would love to see it in London or New York someday. Could be the next phantom of the Opera if the Music is delivered as it is in this demo album.

this song gives the feeling of two lovers, one changed by their time apart, one still hopeful, reuniting and finding that they can't simply pick up where they left off.

A story told:
By those he trusted.
Those he loved.
And those who then... Moved on.

MERCEDES:

My God, my heart beats faster

And my mind is racing

Could it be…?

Could it be that you’ve come back to life?

I know those eyes following me

Dark and familiar and deep as the sea

I know that face, strange though it seems

Younger and kinder it haunts all my dreams

How can you stand there?

A whisper from me

Yet, somehow be so far away

In eyes once familiar how stranger I seem

With so many words left to say

EDMOND:

This man is dead

He is no more

He died a little each day

Like a thief, the Chateau D’If has stolen him away

The mind plays tricks

You are confused

The man you seek is long gone

Dead and cold

A story told

By those he trusted, those he loved, and those who then moved on

Both singing different lyrics at the same time:

EDMOND:

I am a ghost; just a mirage

Who chases traces of you

MERCEDES:

There in that voice

Traces of you

Dark and familiar and deep as the sea

EDMOND:

This man is dead

He is no more

And though it’s torturing me

MERCEDES:

I know those eyes

Torturing me

BOTH:

Can either of us really ever be free?

How can you stand there?

A whisper from me

When you are still so far away

And why does the truth seem too hard to be true?

With so much broken

EDMOND:

And so much damage

BOTH:

There are no words

EDMOND:

Left to say

I love Count's voice. 1:39 It sounds so...demonic. It remains me Hyde's Dangerous game or Dracula's There is always tomorrow or The Phantom in some way. I wish good 2017 to you, Broadcast Zero and thank you for this ! :)

edit: Thank you <3 I haven't expected so many likes!

I think the saddest thing is that Mercedes is completely innocent and never "moved on" like Dantes thinks.
