Man hours are not a significant cost in a BEV; the reason Chinese BEVs prices are low; is subsidies amounting to 231 billion direct to makers resulting in illegal dumping below cost. Unfortunately this has given rise to so many Chinese makers they are in a race to the bottom on price and quality.

What does Canada gains by this move?
China is Canada’s second biggest trade partner.
Tariffs should be avoided when possible, and this one is simply to please the USA it seems.

China is free to setup shop and build parts and cars in North America. PoleStar is doing it.
Why is this different from China requiring western companies manufacturing in china to partner with a Chinese company?

Unlike Australia other economies manufacture cars. With how China subsidizes their economy and the disparity in worker compensation allowing products to flood the market would very negatively affect Canadian workers and the economy at large.

Steel is a great example they dump cheap steel then they wash out the competition then they all lose their jobs and china wins.

Shilling for EV’s no matter cost is low IQ, most things aren’t so simple …

Only idiots won't support 100% or 200% tariff if Canada could give me as good and as cheap as the Chinese cars.

A friend here asked- why not just let them give us cheap cars based on the $200 billion they have spent subsidizing them? Answer: because they won’t stay cheap. Once our manufacturers are gone prices will go up. And depending on China is not something you would think an Australian would casually advise. Remember what happened a couple of years ago when an Australian government spoke up about human rights in China. Not only was Australia shut out of China, but the Chinese government started talking about how many missiles they had. Trade for China is an arm of politics and global power. They could pull the rug out from under trading partners at any time- like they did to Australia.

This is absolutely BS. As a Canadian I am outraged by this purely political move to placate the anti EV, conservative, anti China demographic.

From 🇨🇦, I’m ☹️😭😡… this obsession with anything anti-China has to stop! The legacy manufacturers should partner up with Chinese brands to catch up with the technology - why reinvent the wheel? Give the consumers what they want! The younger generations don’t want ICE cars.

No problem, Tesla is the only EV worth buying anyway, a fully integrated, proprietary EV.
