Jakarta, Indonesia - Where tourists Don't Go

I am always curious to look behind the tourist places in each country that I visit. So, I want to do the same here in Jakarta, Indonesia. I heard that the area around the old port in north Jakarta is interesting and I also heard that it might possible to do a boat ride there. So, I went to the port in Jakarta, called Sunda Kelapa, had a walk around, met tons of friendly people and ended up inside a water village. Definitely a place where you don't see tourists in Jakarta. For your directional knowledge :

Jalan Besar = Big Road
Jalan Utama = Main Road
Gang = Alleyway/walkway/small road
Kiri = Left
Kanan = Right
Depan = Ahead / Front
Lurus = Straight Ahead
Mentok = End of the straight road/street/pathway (onto T or L section)

Hi Ken. Thank you for showing us this side of Jakarta that tourists do not visit. This educational journey shows us the local community and their way of life around the port area. 7:05 I dont think that boat is going to Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), but if my guess is right, it is heading to Reo in East Nusa Tenggara (near Komodo Island). Your generosity is amazing. Keep up the good work. Regards from Singapore🇸🇬

We really worry about you going to places like this on your own Ken. Not all people are nice like you; it’s not worth the risk. Be careful, stay safe!

4:04 4:26 The Sunda Kelapa Port area was the old port of Jakarta before independence when it was colonized by the Dutch, now more activities have moved to the Tanjung Priok Port area. This area is often flooded because it's often affected by coastal tidal flooding.

12:05 12:33 23:13 Many people in Indonesia continue to smoke due to a combination of cultural acceptance and psychological factors like stress relief and social belonging. The act of smoking is often perceived as a coping mechanism for stress or as a social ritual and gatherings, serving as a form of social glue. For instance, offering a cigarette is considered a gesture of friendship and hospitality, which can make it a prioritized expense even over basic necessities like rice and eggs.

26:03 Many people in Indonesia frequently smile, greet, and wave to foreign tourists as a reflection of their deeply ingrained cultural values of hospitality and warmth. This behavior is rooted in the hereditary culture of Indonesia, which places a strong emphasis on "gotong royong, " (mutual cooperation) a Indonesia term for communal cooperation and social harmony, leading to a desire to make visitors feel welcome.

Hi ken.. I think the man means “Riau” not Rio. It is a province in Indonesia located on the east coast of the central island of Sumatra. 😊

Hi Ken, thank you very much for this authentic vlog. In 1991 i had been to Jakarta and went into the slums, which had only wooden huts and looked poorer as the area, where you have been. But it might be possible, that over 30 years they exchanged the wooden huts to the simole buildings, that you showed. It could be the same area, because i was also nbear the port as i remember. But 2 years later i had been to Calcutta (nowadays Kolkata), where even in the citycenter is was more difficult to cope with. Even 10 years later Calcutta was a lot better, and this is around 20 years ago.

I really liked this video. You should do both some tourist places and also such places where we actually experience life.
