Masking is the granddaddy of skills in Photoshop. Master masking and you're well on your way to conquering Photoshop. In graphic and web design as well as photograph retouching, masking is the fastest and easiest way to erase layers without actually erasing them. This allows you to fine tune your adjustments and graphics down to the pixel without worrying about erasing or having to undo a thousand times. Check out this "Photoshop in 90 seconds" tutorial to learn how you can start masking today.

Genuinely, this is how tutorial videos should go. He showed in 2 mins what people try to show in 30 minute videos. Efficient and easy to understand. This guy is the man.

Explained in two minutes better than my PS instructor did in two hours. Many thanks.

This helps a lot because before if I wanted to change the car green I would probably get the polygon lasso tool around the car and then change the hue/saturation or color balance of the car. This way is less time consuming, looks more realistic and gives you more freedom to change and manipulate the layer mask. Thanks

Simple, to the point and no blah blah blah. I like learning in this way. I don't want to be blinded with the science. I just need to know what to click and what to select. Good vid

Eight years later and still relevant, still good. I needed a quick refresher on a couple of basics but didn't have time for a 30-minute comprehensive video. This was perfect! (Um, despite a few face palms and oh yeahs.) Thanks!

So what colour was the car originally? There's 2 coloured cars in the layer part, so it confused me. Why didn't you start with just 1 picture?

Please explain to us newbies how you got the two differently coloured images in the first place. How could you make the original image green, or yellow for that matter? :) Thanks! Beside that, great tutorial and on point!

thanks Tut.  Most of all I like that you shared that little bit about hitting cntrl-i to invert the white/black color of the mask.  I've watched others just say they're changing little things like that without explaining how. To them I'm sure it's such a minor thing they don't think about it but for people just getting started in PS it can be so frustrating if you can't get past the first steps because a simple command wasn't explained.

This was my first video in process of learning about masking, already having two different layers with different cars and no info about masking but only black & white .. I am confused, feels like he started in middle and just wants to show his skills without giving info about masking. 15 minutes videos make sense now.

Thank you so much for this. Short, and to the point.
I always give up on tutorials because people make them so long, it gets so boring. Don't get me wrong, videos on in-depth subjects and tips can be useful, but when I am looking to learn ONE tool, it doesn't need to be 30 minutes long. If I am watching a video on a photoshop tool, I don't need you to tell me 479873 different ways to duplicate my layer because I already know. Again, thank you.

Dude, I swear, years and years of being confused about masks for some dumb reason, and your whip it out and splash it about 2 minute zinger fixed me.

I am doing this exactly as intsructed, but it only adds a translucent red layer when I brush over it. I doubt anyone will see or answer it, but I can't figure this out by myself.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a quick tutorial. For anybody challenged with being hard of hearing, you can either pause, rewind, or go watch every other tutorial video that's nearly half an hour long. This was summed up succinctly and communicated effectively in the short window. Great job! Thanks!
