We all have our favorite plugins which we are used to or just like the most. In this video, I will show you the 5 plugins I use the most when mixing drums. Of course I use more - depends on the genre and needs, but I find myself using those 5 plugins the most or almost every time. Let me know if you like them as well or which plugins you use for your drum mixes.

I love this video! It’s great to hear how others mix drums. I use similar plugin from UA, but the concepts are similar. Great job Mike! 👍🏻✌🏻🤟🏻

Your channel is amazing man, I'm learning heaps from you! It'd be amazing if you could consider a video from your actual work flow with this external plug ins. Rock on man 🤘🏽

SSL 4000E is really good, it sits on every track of my mix and the random channel feature really incorporates the subtle differences from channel to channel. I mostly use it for additive/coloring eq, compression and filters, then followed by Pro-Q 3 for surgical EQ. Mixing drums with these two is simply intuitive, rewarding and easy.

Hello Mike I have tried to strart mixing differently on my last two covers but I don't use any other plugins than the my drum VST. But maybe in the future I will have to look into some EQ plugins!!

The Toneboosters eq v4 is a cheaper alternative for the Fab pro q3. There’s also a great tape plugin by Toneboosters.
Sonimus cs is also great. It emulates the 4000 g for decreasing frequencies and 4000e for increasing. Sounds amazing.
The best natural drum gate/leveller for me is the Meldaproduction mdrumleveler.
Hope Mike will take a look at the Meldaproduction Mdrummer.

Neutron 3 looks a bit like Ozone 9. Did you paid the full price for SSL 4000 E ? It's really expensive for 1 plugin I think? Great video Mike!🍻😎👍

MAN spot on. The tape machine is a must plug in. I use it on every track and I use it as the last plug in on the master fader on the 2 track setting. I also use decapitator on the Punish button on the master fader also and very slightly mix it in parallel. Like you said, distortion in parallel on kicks and snares is so awesome. Aside from drums, decapitator is literally a plug in you can use on almost anything. Bass guitars jump into life using that plug in.

Mike, seeing as how we already use mastered VST sounds (just recently moved on to the Pearl Mimic pro which is awesome BTW) whats your approach with these plug ins or any in general for stuff like EQ/Compression? Seeing as how the Mimic pro module has a terrific room mic option on every instrument that sounds really good. Do you slightly add some EQ/comp on every drum/cymbals? Again, I assume you dont do much esp with VST drums that sound better every year. I def use Slates console emulator on every track and sometimes i dont even touch it. Just running it through flat makes it pop more. Whats your view on tweaking/messing around with already nice sounding VST drums?

Thanks for a great video Mike! By the way with regards to SD3, do you have any tips on deciding which sample libraries to buy, when you are trying to achieve a specific sound? In my case I’m trying to get close to the sound of Matt McGuire in his cover of New Rules, and I’m not able to get that far only using the essential sample library.
