Knowing when its time to resole your dress shoes can be a challenge. Taking them in too soon would waste money on a perfectly good outsole, but wait too long and you can cause serious damage that cannot always be repaired. We go over 3 tips that will help you decide if it is time to take your shoes into a cobbler to get fixed.

Ways To Know If Your Shoes Need To Be Resoled:

#1 Run your fingers over the center of the outsole to check for wrinkles or softness
#2 Any holes means you've reached the lifetime of the outsole
#3 Inspect the perimeter of the outsole to look for stitches exposed

Very informative video! As a shoe cobbler, I can’t recommend enough that folks bring in their shoes to be re-soled or for new heel pads BEFORE they get too bad. Often times, if the damage is too bad, it can’t be fixed. Keep your uppers in good shape with routine conditioning, as Kirby has so often stated, and periodically check the your heel pads and soles. 👍🏻

What are your thoughts on companies like Crockett & Jones who seem to insist on fitting a new welt every time you send a pair of shoes back in? Has always seemed to me that this would shorten the life of the shoes terribly. Surely replacing the welt only when it absolutely cannot be stitched to a fresh sole is best? Seems that is your approach here, even using original holes where possible to extend the life of the welt.

Crockett actually specific that a pair of shoes can only be re-soled 4-5 times, and I imagine this is because they're fundamentally damaging the insole and upper every time they stitch on a new welt!

Hello, and thank you for these useful insights on shoe care. I have a practical question. We generally agree that we should not wear the same pair of shoes twice in a row. Is this only referred to two days in a row? For example, if I have a meeting in the morning, let's say from 8:00 to 12:00, and then I get back home and take the shoes off, should I wear the same pair for an evening meeting the same day, or should I wear another pair? .. I mean I guess to can call putting on a new welt extensive .. but for most shoes the welt would be replaced because it's sanded so far down to get a narrow look no?.. I tend to get my welts replaced every other resole ok my western boots

You can buy the heel plates from Ebay and put them on your self no need to pay anyone I always do it my self it's so fucking easy
