Awesome application of optimization: time optimization. Say one has to finish a calculus exam in 75 minutes. The calculus exam has a total of 8 problems with the expected time being 9.375 minutes per problem for each exam. However, the individual wants to be able to double check each problem by differentiating their integration problems to arrive back at the original function confirming their answer is correct. Thus, each question must take on average 4.6875 minutes to achieve this desired outcome. How can the individual optimize their time management skills to achieve success on their calculus exam?

The function f(t) = 2t^2 describes the function of time (in seconds) that the student produces per second of time. Thus f(seconds) = 2(75 seconds)^ 2 = 11, 250 seconds or 187.5 minutes. Currently, the student’s function is unoptimized being 187.5 minutes for the exam compared to the allotted 75 minutes. Thus, one needs to set d/dx = 0. d/dx (2t^2)= 4t. 4t=0, t=0. Thus, if the student were to optimize their time, they would need to do each question in 0 seconds; this isn’t practical though.

Rather than use the product rule...Wouldnt it have been easier to evaluate (6-2x)^2 * x
and just differentate each term?

y = (4x^2 -24x +36)x
y = 4x^3 - 24x^2 +36x
dy/dx = 12x^2 -48x + 36.
Then solve as before dy/dx = 0

However.. there are some practical problems still to be solved !! In order to actually make the box

for the first 2, completing the square into a(x-h)^2+k where (h, k) are the coordinates of the max/min point also works

My commercial operation? A business that sells fruits and vegetables only:
E. A total of thirteen different items are offered;
F. Each item I buy at a different price, say a range between 0, 5-3, 50 $/kg.
G. In order to keep costs down suppliers sell to me no less than 30 kg and no more than 60 kg of each item daily;
H. In order to move all items out the fastest possible, I want to try selling all thirteen items at three different prices, depending on the their purchasing price for each item. Let’s assume: four items are bought at 0, 50$/kg; five items are bought at 2, 50$/kg; four items are bought at 3, 50$/kg.
I. Fixed costs: 1000$/month; variable costs: 409$/month.
J. How would one use differential calculus to optimize minimum kg of each one of the thirteen items bought everyday (for freshness?) AND realize profits from selling the maximum amount of kg for each of the three pricing groups of fruits and vegetables. Thank you.

concept of maxima and minima can only be applicable when a function is continuous tho right? I am not sure but before applying dy/dx=0 you have to ensure the continuity of a function.. Correct me if I am wrong i am new to calculus
