We get this question more than we anticipated. Is this a thing? Do neurotypical people actually copy autistic traits? Let us know what you think in the comments. Thank you!

If this does happen more often than you realize, I imagine it is because the neurotypical person is trying to bond with the autistic person and considers copying their behavior to be a good way to initiate that bonding. Also, the neighbor kid in the video appears to be quite young and young kids learn by copying behavior from others, so there's that too.

I've not seen this personally but it seems like getting caught up in an autistic persons excitement and sharing in the experience 😀 also, I masked my whole life and still do a lot when I'm in public. I masked so well that no one questioned if I might have autism until I was 26 😅

I have a child who has ASD and one that is NT and I don't think the NT copies the child with ASD. I do have to say that my NT child picks up on the fact that his sibling is different and will try to use some of the things my older son does to get attention or equal things out. My son with ASD needs a stim toy while driving, so my NT will demand he has a toy too even though he doesn't really "need" it and will fight with my other child over it. I notice more so that my son with ASD will pick up my NT sons verbage and use it to express himself which can be frustrating because the NT child says things to us that he'd never say at school or in public and my ASD child doesn't have the ability to understand that.

The best answer I can think of: Younger kids (Neurotypical person) might copy an Autistic person as a sign of “self-acceptance/awareness or wanting to belong.”

Bonding or Stimming could be part of it. 2:25

One of my teachers is autistic (so called high functioning). She is so charismatic, that a lot of us started imitating her gestures and way of speaking without noticing. When I am around my autistic kids, I tend to show my excitement more, just like they do. So it is all subtle things.

My 2 year old son copys his sisters stims sometimes but he thinks they are playing. I see it alot in younger kids copying the behavior. Love your channel btw 😊

I think you just saw what most children do on the copy each other all the time because all children are learning. Children learn much of their social interactions (and this includes actions and behaviors) from each other. Ironically, this "copying" is one of the shortcomings of kids on the spectrum, we could not decipher or interpret what was going on around us, so we did not "copy" or learn all those complex social things Neurotypical kids do.

I see people copy in a mocking way but not really in this situation.
I love this channel! As an Autistic afab it's interesting to see from an amab perspective!

My oldest daughter is nonverbal Autism and everyone in my family has said my son is copying my daughter. He never stop he just continues to flap his hands when he is really happy. Thanks for sharing.

I did this when I was a kid. I usually copy people behavior because I think these behaviours are cool, and I made them my habits lol

I'm the Oldest of 7 kids and none my siblings have ever copied my "behaviour" as such. They have actually worked around my differences to sustain a bond between us. They are all as "normal" as can be but i am quite stimmy and not fond of touch, i also struggle to verbalise. They dont treat me as a lesser person though, they claim to idolise me which makes me so happy because i always felt like i was letting them down by not being a good enough older sibling.

I think if someone is good at code switching they may change their behaviors slightly (for example I notice my speech pattern changes with whoever I'm talking to), but it would only be temporary, like in the video. My son is neurotypical, but he has hand stims, and has had them his whole life. I've never seen his friends try it, and his younger brother has never mimicked it

I love how you explained the difference between how NT person copies a person with autism, I don’t recall any of my cousin Trey’s brothers copying him whenever I was around them the most.😊😊😊

I have Septo Optic Dysplasia, which caused me to be born totally blind and autistic. One time, my little sister decided to copy me by using a stick like a cane, and she told my dad and stepmom, “look. I’m Sienna.” And she started to use the stick like a cane, and she started rocking back and forth like I do. I rock because of my blindness and autism. And my stepmom punched me in the shoulder, not exactly hard though. But she’s like, “see what you taught her?” I don’t ever remember my siblings copying me running into things or spilling things though.

As an adult with ASD I will sometimes use unique words in every day speech. I notice my neurotypical friends will adopt those words and begin using them more often than I do.
