The REMARKABLE Night Witches - The Amazing Soviet Female Pilots - Historical Curiosities

The "Night Witches" was the nickname given to the Soviet 588th Night Bomber Regiment, entirely composed of women, during World War II. Formed in 1941 by aviator Marina Raskova, the regiment used slow and vulnerable Po-2 biplanes that were highly maneuverable. They carried out night missions, flying low and silently, causing significant psychological terror and material damage to the enemy. These women's bravery was crucial in the defense of the Taman Peninsula in 1943. They completed over 30,000 missions and were highly decorated, leaving a lasting legacy.

The regiment flew harassment and precision bombing missions against the German military from 1942 until the end of the Second World War (1945). At its largest, it had 40 two-person crews. The regiment flew over 23, 000 sorties, dropping over 3, 000 tons of bombs and 26, 000 incendiary shells.
