B. GIVE IV BENZO STAT! TIME IS BRAIN! This is Status Epilepticus, which is when a seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, OR having more than 1 seizure within a 5 minutes period, without returning to a normal level of consciousness between episodes. This is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY that may lead to permanent brain damage or death.

In children, the main cause of status epilepticus is an infection with a fever. In adults, the common causes include: stroke, low blood sugar, alcohol withdrawal. Signs and symptoms include: muscle spasms, confusion, unusual noises, loss of bowel or bladder control, clenched teeth, difficulty speaking. Status is an EMERGENCY. There is no time to waste. In emergencies like this, remember your ABC’s: Airway, breathing, circulation. Once those are stabilized, STOP THE SEIZURE. How? Give a dose of benzodiazepine (lorazapam or diazepam) STAT! Then give dose of anti-seizure medication like keppra or valproate). If the seizure continues despite appropriate treatment at 5 minutes, GIVE ANOTHER DOSE OF BENZO!

Thank you! This is exactly how I was diagnosed with a seizure disorder. i'd sustained a head injury a few weeks earlier and was hospitalized for it. My "shaky episodes" were blamed on stress surrounding the injury. I was at a friend's office when I felt a "shaky episode" coming on and said something. That's the last I remember for awhile. Not the ambulance, ER, being admitted or having an EEG done. Neurologist comes in the next afternoon "How long have you had a seizure disorder?" and explained about the EEG findings. It wasn't the best news but it's manageable.

Thanks for putting these scenarios out, because it helps to recognize when something is serious going on with patients or others.❤

Dr. Jake, my answer is B which was correct. However, I did not know that status was an emergency. I appreciate your information, thank you.

I appreciate these videos so much. I’m an LPN charge nurse at a skilled facility and it’s nice to have something job my brain once in awhile.

Are there any videos on here about mental health emergencies and advice on how to handle them? We took a family member to the ER that was released with zero help from the doctor even though they are delusional and wanting to get a gun. I don’t understand why the doctor would do this and there doesn’t seem to be many resources for us. This person is in denial so it’s making everything more difficult to get them help.

I was guessing that one, but I had no idea why. Thank you!

That also explains why people feel so bad and exhausted after an epileptic episode. You pump them full of benzo. (And also brain needs to reset) but then theres still the effects of the benzo working

I'm a teenager and I'd love to go into a career in paediatrics. As a kid I haven't been listened to by doctors and I really want to be able to change that for other children. If I can give at least one other child the experience that I never got to have then I will feel like I've succeeded. 😊

Hi @JakeGoodmanMD I am super worried I might get Dissociative amnesia whenever my mother or father passed. Or maybe gain depression, I have stayed awake for days think about when my family and my life will end while being terrified at the thought of death. I am so scared and it makes me lose focus at school and have trouble sleeping. Is there anyway I could get help? I don't want to tell my parents cause I don't want them to worry for me. But I am so scared and I feel like I can't keep living without them. Please help...

Thank you for sharing all of these scenarios with us... reading through your answers certainly helps to keep these treatments in mind if, God forbid, we happen to come across something you have spoken to. It is a great resource to keep nearby. I love learning how to recognize the issue and more importantly, how to help.
