I think many of your viewers would also appreciate the time it takes to correctly subtitle and translate the nuances of the Japanese language into English. Thank you for that.

I love Shimabukuro sensei’s attention to detail when teaching.

Sai are my favorite. Love the whipping strike and versatility of the attacks.

We do the same in aikido. I learned that we aim at the eye so the opponent cant see the exact length of the staff. Same thing with a sword. Also the best way to aim when striking with the staff is to not look where you are hitting. It might sound weird, but your aim will be much better if you just look straight at the opponent instead. If you do it this way, your aim will have be precise to the centimeter (or even less) level.

A very informed and informative introduction to the Matayoshi style Bojutsu from Shimabukuro Sensei. Well done on your continued exploration of Okinawa Karate Kobudo. I have enjoyed the series and look forward to the next video. Thank you for all your hard work.

Thank you for this video, Sensei. I was taught to strike the collar bones/ neck, overhead, below like an uppercut to the groin, elbow and knees, and to thrust and twist forward it backwards into the opponent essentially to loosen their grip if they managed to grasp my weapon. There is just so much to learn concerning the Bo. 😅

I liked that explanation behind the differences between the styles of kabudo. I would like to hear more around the differences in methods of training.

@3:26 you have the perfect holding position. When all your opponents can see is a “dot” end of the bo it’s is a very big advantage. It gives you the option for thrust or strike.
It’s too bad we don’t have competitive BO a kumi bo training with full kendo gear. I would love to train like that

My favorite is the bo and Sai because in my opinion they supplement everything else. Tsukai kata for sai demonstrates so many principles that are applied universally

Aim for the head I guess create the most pressure.

The first Bo lesson that I remember was in the late ‘70s. The Sensei was, more or less, a contemporary of mine, but had continued to train when I stopped for a while as I had a family and had started my career. He was a talented Shodan and I was still San Kyu. Anyway, we were doing a Shotokan Kata (can’t remember which one) which he said had originally been a Bo Kata. At some point, we were supposed to do a Jodan attack, but he didn’t specify the target. After a couple of repetitions, he came by to watch me. My attack was to my opponent’s collar bone. The Sensei stopped the class and said, “Don is attacking the collar bone. Don’s a Probation Officer, everyone attack the collar bone!” LOL I have NO idea if this was the proper target, but since I was a Probation Officer, everyone had to do it my way. Still makes me laugh!

I maybe not in karate but on kali. we have a similar weapon called bankaw, the basics taught to me are similar to this without the extending thrusts. I came across this video randomly and appreciated the details explained by Shimabukuro sensei on how to handle the Bo. will integrate it on my training. thank you

Also in thing about the aim, I think about attacking the hands and feet or ankles

Kobudo is really integrated and goes hand in hand with Goju and I think it’s in all Okinawan styles
