Whales sleep vertical, but normally a lot deeper. But it has a baby so she is keeping it safe. Great mother!

Imagine you're in the ocean, in a Tupperware container, and a whale shows up.

Mom is asleep. They usually do this deeper but because she has a calf she is at the surface so the calf can access air easier.

Poor mom was trying to catch a much-needed nap, until she heard some high-pitched Aussie squawking in the background 😂

I think that transparent kayak would be terrifying to be in if there were a bunch of huge sharks swimming around.

He's in a plastic cup in the middle of the ocean, and there's an angry mama whale about to make sushi out of his tushie.

It’s a very rare behavior rarely seen by humans, where a whale's tail pokes above the water and remains motionless for minutes. It's often seen in female humpbacks with their calves, and is thought to be a way for the mother to rest while still keeping an eye on her calf. The mother can keep her body close to the surface, allowing her to minimize dive depths for her calf, who can then nurse at will. You are very very lucky to have witnessed this and to catch it on camera is amazing. I hope this helped anyone who didnt know what the whale was doing understand😄

Lobtailing or Tail Slapping

This involves lifting the tail out of the water and then slapping the surface, often quite forcefully in a belly or ventral-down position. If the whale is on its back (dorsal-down), it is called an inverted lobtail.

Others have found that it may be a way for the whales to cool down in hot waters, by exposing their tails to wind. In any case, it's a stunning reminder that there's still a lot to learn about these gorgeous mammals.

Offshore, a whale tail pokes above the water surface, where it stands motionless for minutes on end. No need to panic! This is a behaviour called tail sailing, a posture that, though rarely observed, is not abnormal. This behaviour is often seen in females accompanied by their calves.
