Why is it not surprising that someone interested in lying was a liar themselves. Perfect.

Let's not forget the people who want us to rewrite nearly every social interaction and law according to these fraudulent studies.

Imagine that one woman at a very prestigious university was able to pull off the manipulation of data. You don't have to think too hard how companies that have inexhaustible sources of cash and influence can manipulate data so that their product can be sold no matter have to think too hard at all.

I'm reminded of the incident a few years ago where a team tried to see if they could get a fake paper, with ridiculous claims in it, published. They succeeded--until someone ratted them out. Instead of the scientific community being alarmed and calling for better reviews and controls, they attacked the team so they wouldn't have to look at themselves in the mirror and admit there were problems that needed addressing. There's always been scholars and scientists more concerned about money/renown/politics than the work, but it feels like it's just become worse and worse in the last few decades. It seems no one wants to have to go through the trouble of doing something about it so they just pretend it's not an issue.

The fact that so many corporations were willing to pay so much for this information always fills me with a simmering anger, a scientific field meant to help human health, perverted to find ways to manipulate people.

Commodified human psychology is one of modern society's worst evils.

When I was in my 20s I was pursuing a PhD in Psychology and ended up taking a major career turn and went to work for the federal government. I remember how flimsy empirical research could be, and how corrupt and anti-scientific the behavioral sciences can be. Worse, the graduate programs operate on the basis of cliques, which are sometimes worse than the cliques you see in business and in the nonprofit sectors. I have extreme skepticism about almost everything in the behavioral sciences, and extreme skepticism about many things in the medical field that involve having "trust in professionals", as opposed to trust in good science.

The scientific method is humanity's greatest tool for understanding our world.
It's such a tragedy that people disgrace it.

Since the 1990's a standard of 3 out of 9 studies replicated has been reduced to 1 out of 9. There have been several articles on this trend over the past decade. It's about the agenda.

Keep in mind, these studies occur in the medical field too. Which could be why off label antivirals somehow don't work in America, but fine in the rest of the world.

Turns out it’s just as easy to buy a scientist as it is a politician

I’m glad you’re covering this — I felt like this story wasn’t getting as much attention as it should

Harvard lied about the effects of sugar in the 1960's. The sugar industry paid them about $40, 000 to say it's not bad for you.

To be honest the field of Psychology has long been plagued with unrepeatable experiments, and research, when it has to do with profits and politics, have always been plagued by fraud.

This seems par for the course when it comes to psychology in general. So many landmark studies over the past 50 years have been thrown in the trash after replication studies failed. There was one study I remember, that claimed if you had someone smile, it would improve their mood. After 40 years it was thrown out. So many of these studies have same sample sizes of ~n=20, it's incredibly unscientific.

THIS is exactly what happens when you allow academic institutions to become consumer products.
