Okay so they completely bamboozled all of us by hiding some really great features until the day of release like
CHROMATIC ABBERATION AND RETRO GRAIN FILTERS!!!

While I agree with you that CELSYS deserve to get paid, I don't believe the backlash to CELSYS was unfounded. The problem with the CSP Subscription changes is that many people, including myself, bought it under the agreement that it was to own a perpetual license to the software, not just a perpetual version of it, which includes bug fixes and updates as part of the package. As well, many bought it as an alternative to photoshop and their sub model. CELSYS absolutely deserve to get paid, but to not only change to a sub model but one that retroactively changes agreements to version 1 - making it lose features like ability to log in on multiple computers and having to log-in every other week (when it first released everyday) - it is effectively communicating that they care less about their userbase's experience and more about the money they will get with these changes, and that is undoubtedly disappointing.

If CSP starts acting up like Adobe then I might actually just flip a table.

My mortgage documents were more easier to understand than Clip Studio's upgrade system

The way 3.0 came out only a year after 2.0 feels a bit iffy to me. I initially intended to buy the perpetual license for EX whenever a new major update dropped, but 50 bucks every year for an upgrade is a bit much. I'd rather have them take longer to release a major version update. But that would mean they'd have to decrease the price for their update pass (for example if they released a major version upgrade every two years instead of one for 50 bucks, it would be cheaper than the current annual update pass which costs 32 bucks a year) or increase the price for their perpetual license.

I guess I'll just stay with 2.0 for now and get an update pass when a really good feature comes out. The thing I want the most right now is a gamut mask-like feature in the color palette section. Apparently Krita has something like that.

Funny enough, i have Photoshop thanks to my school but i still prefer CSP because it was easier use and still considered cheaper for almost 10 years, I've used CSP for everything! Now my materials are bugging and most of them arent loading. I thought it was time for an update. Come to find out there's passes! I felt a bit wounded seeing that. We already pay for so many subscriptions for work, I'd like the one thing that carried me into an industry to NOT have all these subscriptions.

Its good to pay workers but people pay lots of money as is and adding to the endless subscriptions doesnt help...

CSP 3.0 launched today. CSP 3.0 = $21.60USD Pro perpetual. and $142USD EX perpetual. (why tf is EX 7 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN PRO?!?!) If you want to "upgrade" from CSP 1.0, they are making you buy CSP 2.0 first, and then buy CSP 3.0, which ends up being $80.38USD. In my opinion, they are massively UPCHARGING EX 3.0, when the normal price has always been around $80 for EX. SCUMMY!

4:28 I can see the automatic shading feature be used for comics it will help out during the colouring stages so I believe it's a quite useful feature for comic artists

i love how straight to the point this is thank you for the quick run down.

With the lighting and shading tool i agree to an extent. Like if im wanting to make art with no time restrictions, sure i need to do it myself... but if im pusing out manga or animations on a time table, imma take every shortcut i can get.

A lot of your Mids belong in Lit. Watermarks to counter AI training is a huge win.
3D tools are extremely useful when deadlines are lighting your ass up, that Posemaniac plugin is LIT.

4:21 You could argue that for literally every time-saving tool you use, down to the liquefy tool you were praising a second ago. For a lot of art, the shading is quite basic and so this lets people skip something that's tedious to do. Don't forget that there are still artists who get mad at the idea of using tools like CSP to paint rather than doing everything from scratch... you're already using a computer to skip the work that goes into creating the various tools you use to paint, from filters to brush effects to perspective warping, etc. This is ultimately just another point along the spectrum. So I disagree with this take, although I can respect it

Man transparent gif support, animation workflow improvements, and timer are all FIRE for me, but I really can't swallow the cost of upgrading to 2.0, THEN 3.0 man

What's the point of perpetual licenses if I need to buy the new version each year or get locked out of having an upgrade path???? Going from a 1.X perpetual license to a 2.0 license is the biggest waste of money for me, can't justify it

It's WAAAY too obvious they want you on the annual pass to the point where perpetual is functionally the same thing but more expensive and worse 😔

it is ABSOLUTELY worth. At least for me. that you can work with vrm models, it has chromatic abberation and the retro filter makes it all worth it considering it's only 18 euros which is cheaper than most equally good programs. but yeah I read your pinned post . tbh i didn't even know 3.0 exist. I would have missed the sale then i by coincidence saw a retweet talking about it and i am SO THANKFUL

The ratio of "mid" to "fire" tools its actually a healthy one. At the very least its not a bad idea for them to divide their resources like that. The tools that you label "mid" are probably gonna give them bigger sales than the tools you're asking for. Because all the "mid" tools are actually beginner tools. Remember that a big chunk of CS audience are hobbyist and beginner artists. If you want to convince that audience to buy your software then you don't show them something that they will be able to use 3-5 years down the line when they have more experience. Because 95% of them will drop the hobby by then. You show them a tool that will help them get where they want to get, as soon as possible. You need something that will get people excited and thinking "Oh shit! I can do this now!".

Besides its not like there weren't any "useful" and "lit" tools. So they didn't forget about the professional/experience artists. Looks like they are aware that beginner tools are their best bet to get new customers.

I like how informative your review is. However, I do have a single gripe.

That being, I think that, considering you don't use and don't want to use the 3D modeling side, you shouldn't rate it. Rating the specific update "mid" because you don't use it isn't really fair. It just serves to make the update as a whole look worse than it is. It would be more fair and pertinent to skip those features rather than just say they're crap.

Im all for supporting software developers who do good work. That said, with the advent of AI systems that can actually do a lot of the heavy lifting in the software development process, the cost of software development should actually be going DOWN DRASTICALLY while the quality of the product SKYROCKETS. You won’t hear many people talking about this, however.

Hi - my 2c:

I have the ex desktop perpetual which I initially purchased in the manga studio days. I always wondered how the company could survive so many years without making me pay for an upgrade. I feel there are many examples out there of subscription (as well as subscription in disguised?) abuse.

So I jumped on today’s upgrade discount just to support CSP as I want them to survive.

I discovered the Posemaniacs integration, and that is a significant change to me: I have yet to dig into the other features.

I believe this product is stellar and has a great price/value ratio.

Keep it up Celsys:)

Well, I started using this program years ago ( manga studio ex4) and that version still holds up to this day. Very Solid tools, excellent performance, but it's not suitable for painting, only for manga workflow (sketch/lineart/ inking/ toning). If that's what you are into, I suggest looking that old bad boi up

I'd be interested in some painting techniques for vfx, like dust, particles, fire etc
