A layer 3 switch can also be used as a router meaning that you can route internet traffic with it, but in the case of cisco most L3 switches cannot do NAT. I used a L3 switch for the incoming internet connection from ISP and to also distribute the Public IP Addresses that were assigned from ISP for us. However LAN networks should always he exposed to internet through a proper router or firewall. It is a good idea to use a switch to route the internet connection in the event when you have more than 1 router or firewall as it has a lot of throughput.

Modern Cisco ISR routers, like the 800 series often have integrated 4/8 port managed switch. And route between SVI ports. I did this on a 877 router.
