Perhaps the one civilization that has come to be associated with impalement was the ancient Assyrian Empire.
Their ferocity and intolerance of rebellion was spelled out clearly on the walls of their palaces and temples, which were decorated in countless illustrations of captured enemy soldiers or rebellious civilians being executed in the most gruesome ways as an example to others. Besides impalement, the Assyrians also utilized many other horrific forms of torture and execution; such as flaying, crucifixion (an early form of it), burning, mass amputation, and slave taking.
Naturally, when the empire eventually fell due to widespread rebellion and foreign invasion, there was more than likely an outpouring of celebration by most in the region.

What our friend Simon didn’t mention was that the stake often had its tip deliberately *rounded* – rather than *sharp.*
That way the penetrating shaft would _push aside_ the organs on its way up – instead of _piercing_ through them.
The end result of this … _erm_ … refinement was that it delayed death and prolonged the excruciating pain.
