This man understands color so well that even his muddy examples don't look bad lol

It really blew my mind how he used warm tones for the shadow and cool tones for highlights, it goes against everything I ever learnt and looks absolutely Deffo trying this from now on

Building up skin tone:

Underlying skin tone

Put secondary underlying skin tone

Skull shape where there is blood flow

Don’t be muddy choose transition colours that work

Put in the planes facing the light and shadow (typically all warm or cool)

Get in some highlights

Optional: Put a skin tone on top to unify the painting

Also optional: Add in some cool or warm colours to keep a warm vs cool balance

Remember the planes of the face and the structure of the skull. Through out and push and pull the blending as though u are sculpting something

Also remember the environment of the face and how it is affected by this environment

This 11:25 must be my favorite part of the video. "Let's do the wrong thing on purpose, so that you see why it's wrong."

Skin is reflective so colors can easily reflect onto it! The color of skin depends on its surroundings and also the pigmentation.

I can't even express how valuable this lesson was for me! I've been "struggling" with colors and skin and been painting skin in a very time-consuming slow way and it never turned out how I envisioned in my head. But I tried this yesterday, following along and I am absolutely amazed by how much faster and "organic" this approach feels! I drew my best skin study EVER yesterday, thanks to this video! <3

it could be great if some artists start to do Tutorials on technique, like what brushes use in a particular situation, and how to use them. Depending on the technique of course. Im not talking about "an spesific brush you use" talking more about type of brushes for each stage of the paint

I’ve always struggled with colouring in general, but when I watched this video I ended up with the most realistic portrayal of skin I’ve ever drawn.

Nice job, Proko!

Love this video. He makes it look so easy, but he's clearly got years of experience. A small suggestion for future videos: please show the whole color selector so the viewer can see hue?

After this video, I went on to do a portrait study without reference, just trying to recall the stuff he said in this video and boy, I got the closest I have ever gotten to a proper skin tone study in my life! I love how he dares to use unconventional base colors (may others use it, but I ain't ever seen anyone do it). Everyone always says to use a variation of orange or red, but this man used green and purple. Love it! Thanks for helping me get a step closer to my goals, Mr. Ahmed!

I've been really demotivated to create art because i've been struggling with coloring and shading, however this has created a new spark in me and i'm excited to practice this technique!
