I think she's fighting with her inner "demons" literally. The thought she will never be better than her mom. Doomed to be the same uncaring monster.
That's why it happens after she starts to have doubts about not being like her mom.
And in the ending sequence, everything is back to normal. It happened inside her, inside her mind.
