I believe that it's heavily implied here that the OG Gotei including Yamamoto, had to gang up on him in order to weaken him. Sasikibe delivered a deathly strike and Yamamoto delivered the finishing blow. Just goes to show that a 1000 years ago, Yamamoto could use dirty tactics just like Yhwach in the current war.
