This is even wilder when you consider what some of their Divisions become in the future:
- 4th becomes an entirely supporting force with doctors, nurses, suppliers, and janitors
- 6th gets taken over by the Kuchiki, who are known to be History Keepers
- 9th becomes a security force with a side gig of arts and culture with a news agency
- 12th becomes an R&D institution

The only Divisions who have remained the same for the past millennia are the 1st and 11th, and possibly the 2nd (mostly because we don't really know when the Shihouin combined the 2nd Division and the Omnitsukido Force)

As a series that loves its fillers, a distant prequel arc about these guys would honestly work quite well. It's disconnected enough from the main story, which means it can do whatever it wants without mucking up canon the way the Zanpakuto arc did. Being a prequel, it can also serve to explain details and expand the lore.

Personal Theory : Yamamoto and Unohana killed them off sometime after the 1st quincy war. They were a bunch of criminals and killers not true captains after all. Having them as leaders of the Gotei 13 after the war is meaningless and troublesome. They were scouted to do all the killings after all. And they served their purpose. To say they died of old age is not logical. Same goes to saying they were killed during missions since we just witnessed how strong they really were. Unohana might be the most notorious criminal among them, but she changed and keep a low profile after meeting Zaraki. So I guess the only logical theory is that the head captain and the kenpachi of that generation teamed up to killed them off. That's explain why the two were the only remaining OG captains when the series started.

EDIT :

Actually one of the reasons behind my theory is when Yhwach steals Yamaji's Bankai, he says that he could use it to awaken the corpses of Yamamoto's subordinates. As we all know, Zanka no Tachi : Minami allow Yamaji to summon the corpses that were killed by his zanpakuto. So this may imply that Yamamoto did not only slay his foes back in the day, but also his subordinates from the original Gotei 13. And to do so, he might need the aid of the second strongest captain from that generation, Unohana Yachiru, who he personally sought out for her swordsmanship and battle prowess before forming the gotei. However, now I don't think that all of them were killed off, maybe some just died in battles.

Tite Kubo has the greatest character design in all of manga. Not only is he able to create a vast expanse of characters that are basically wearing the same outfit yet strangely exudes character diversity, but he also has illustrated people of color that does not affirm stereotypes unlike other manga.
