I talked to Leo last week and asked him about this. He said he didn’t even know what a standby switch was at the time in the 60s and just added it because it looked cool and made the amp seem more professional.

Appreciate the straight answer. I just bought a 5150 combo. For a bedroom amp. Lol. Probably should've gotten something a little smaller, but I don't want to take it back. And u should do another video and talk about OPs mom. 😂

on/off standby being on the back of the 5150ii is straight up a pain in the ass.

Just received my Marshall DSL 40CR, and read the Quick Start Guide. It doesn't say anything about engaging the Standby switch when powering On/Off the amp. It just says to ensure all speakers are proper and turn all the Master Volumes to 0 and plug in your guitar before turning the amp on. The only mention is to reduce the power level from 40W down to 20W or to place the amp into standby mode. This is directly from Marshall themself.

The standby switch is also useful if you need to unplug something from your signal chain or if you need to plug something into it, of course you can also just turn the amp volume off too

I just got my 5150 stealth 50 watt, paired with the 2x12 EVH cab this morning! So okay I want to get this figured out haha. I flip the power on? And wait 30 seconds? Then I flip the stand by on? And I get to start playing? Then when finished I turn off both? Or doesn’t power come off first and then standby? Sorry new to anything tube amp
