But Michael Stipe seems like the kind pf guy who, if he thought there was anyone in the audience suffering from some kind of mental trauma, he would stick around and give every single one of them a giant hug and tell them everything will be ok. I think this is THE song that every young person today needs to hear. Especially coming from a mature and celebrated artist. Just knowing that you're not the only one who hurts gives you permission to let that be ok and know that you wont feel like that forever. It provides validation and hope. Things that all humans need from each other.
When my kids were in high school and occasionally struggling with all the social and academic pressures, and feeling like those things were 'forever' things, I'd remind them that high school is just a few years long, barely a blip in the course of their lives, and when its over, every single person will move on and the experience of high school will be but a memory and no big deal at all. Those words always made them feel like they would be ok. And they were.
It's true that everybody hurts sometimes. And it's true that despite that hurt, we will be ok. We can even lean into that hurt, stay with it for a little while, be still as you fully feel it. Doing that is like having a full-on cry, just letting it all out, no holds barred, then taking a nap, and waking up feeling like a giant weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You feel quite literally lighter even though the thing that hurt you is still there. Nothing material has changed. But now that you've allowed yourself to feel and accept the whole ugly truth and pain, and released the emotions that come with that pain, somehow that gives you the strength to deal with your problems. They don't seem as big as they did before. They don't seem as hopeless. Thats what this song is about. We all hurt, we all cry, and that's how it's supposed to be. And we're going to be ok. We really are.
This song has the best lyrics, best composition of music, best delivery, since Queen delivered us Bohemian Rhapsody. A life changing, society changing, piece of music. It's been nearly 50 years since Freddy Mercury sang that song to the world and to this day it is celebrated by every generation. REM will go down in history in the same way for this song. Freddy would be proud!
